What a crap day! Tyre Fixing Disaster

Thought Id tell you about my interesting day ...

It all started a few days ago when BMW did a service on my car and noticed that there was a nail in the driver side rear tyre. They marked where it was and since it was late in the day asked me if I wanted to book it back in to get it replaced, I said Id get back to them. I thought well since I don't have run flats (Efficient Dynamics - should have Michelin Energy Savers) I can just get it repaired

So today I popped round to my local tyre fitter, a place I have used before, I never thought that they were great but they certainly hadn't done anything to put me off using them etc etc.

I asked how much is a standard tyre repair - 16 the lady tells me

What car is it? BMW 320d ED I answer

Does it have run flats? she asks - I don't know I don't think so it shouldn't have.

I hand my keys over and my car is driven away, behind the scenes without my awareness the wheel is removed, the tyre is popped off the rim, the nail is pulled out of the tyre and a the man drills a hole in the tyre ready to plug it ......

Then he bangs on the window and asks the receptionist to go see her.....

She comes out to me and says, it IS a run flat, you said it isn't we cant repair it!

My reply okay Ill take it away... You cant we have drilled a hole in your tyre ...

Why? ... Because you said it wasnt a RunFlat!

Er No, I said I dont know ... You are the tyre specialist, why didnt you check?

We didnt need to ... you said it wasn't a runflat!

Er no I didnt

Yes You did

Etc etc , this turns into a full blown screaming match in front of all the other customers.

I said "You are a professional tyre fitting company, why didn't you check properly?"

At this point the manager comes out and tells me that its all my fault because the tyre was on the wrong way round thus disguising the Run-flat marker....

"So you only check one side of the tyre?" I asked

Yes ... he tells me

"What the hell do I do now - do you have a tyre in stock?"

"No"

"So what are you going to do?"

"Repair it" he says

"You just said that you cant ever fix run-flats"

"Who said that?"

"Your receptionist"

The receptionist proceeded to tell me that she found it very odd that I hadnt allowed BMW to repair the tyre and that I must have a devious plan to cause trouble and conn them into having a Run Flat tyre repaired because somehow I knew that they wouldn't do it under normal circumstances...... Like i have time to make shit like that up!

This went on and on and on, till I demanded my car back. A few minutes later he comes back with my key and says "Ive repaired it for you free of charge"

I left perplexed by the idea that a company advertising 30 years of tyre fitting didn't check the tyre, drilled a hole in it and then blamed me!

Now the nice people at BMW marked my tyre with a big yellow line so I knew where the nail was...... and funnily enough right next to the line was big circle with the letters RSC and the word "Outside"

The tyre WAS the right way round all along and the tyre fitter had put it back on exactly the same way round as he had found it .... So in an attempt to cover up his blatant mistake he lied through his teeth to cover it up, but the slack bugger wasn't even bright enough to clean the big yellow line off!!!!!

Ended up back at BMW having two new Michelin Energy saver non run-flats fitted. As an added bonus I got a pack of BMW top trumps cards and a free wash and vac

There was no way I was driving round on a repaired run flat that had been fixed by an incompetent moron who didn't know his own job.

What started out as a 16 tyre fix cost me 190 quid

Not really the day I had hoped for ....

If anyone got to the end of this thread ..... sorry its so long... but its so therapeutic venting my frustrations out on the keyboard!

Steve

In short, these people sound utter cunts.
The fact that any one of them (especially the manager) was prepare to vent in front of other customers is a solid indicator of their cuntiness.

I have over the years developed a pathological distrust of any tire fitter. I always assume they are going to try and rip me off, lie to me or damage something.

I must come across as the most annoying customer ever as i make sure they know I will be watching every move the garage monkeys make and that i will be checking the wheel before paying.

The OP is quite brave...I would never hand my car keys to tyre fitters or MOT testers!

I would if I saw them drive it into the testing bay, otherwise how do you expect the MOT testers to do their job when you yourself are probably not qualified (in a Health & Safety way I mean) or insured to drive it onto the ramps for MOT.

Hi Sean

The new (ish) one at Wakefield, nr Ossett / Horbury

As I say I have used them before, they have done wheel alignment and tyre changes for me on at least 2 or three other cars without any issue, All ok when the goings good ..... not so great at acknowledging their own mistakes..

Hmmm exactly the same branch we use, just off Albert's Drive? I always reccomend a local tyre fitter near our work, called Henry's Tyres in Castleford, local lads who get the job done and look after your alloys.

I thought you were allowed to repair runflat tyres as long as they hadn't been run flat?

The garage went to great lengths to show me posters that clearly demonstrated that repairing a Run Flat tyres was a no go ..... They stressed that it is NOT something that they do!

And when they had no other choice, they changed their advice to .... but its really at the garages discretion, there is nothing to say that you cant .......

Im sure someone knows the official answer, but I don't, today has left me utterly bewildered by it all

BMW were great though. Ordered tyres in at last minute and booked me in late in the day to make sure the car was right. And as said above, free wash and vac too

Not really that funny is it? RFT's should not be repaired. This is the official advice from BMW and tyre manufacturers. Just because some people choose to and some garages go against the advice, doesn't mean it's safe to do.

Anyway, why would the tyre fitter turn you, and your money away if this wasnt true?
