Removing Lower Bumper Grills

Are the lower bumper grills on the front SE bumper removable without removing the bumper?

I have a aero lip to fit and would like to paint them black before it goes on. I know I could paint in situ but would like to do it properly.

It's all plastic clips as far as I remember but it can be a bit of a wrestling match even with the bumper off.

Ideal way is to take bumper off as the grills come off inwards

However I managed to take the centre grill off while leaving the bumper on, iirc there are 8 tabs around and you will have to push in and slide grill out

The 2 grills on either side dont come off and will have to to takw bumper off to get tem off. I sprayed mine in gloss black leaving the 2 side grills on

Oh well! Looks like I will just have to paint them on the car

I think I will use the sponge technique rather than spraying.

Garage List
The lower side grills are accessible via each wheel arch liner.

Needless to say the wheels have to come off the get the liners out.

The side grills are removable, remove road wheel and arch liner to get access, you will need a long screwdriver to press down on the plastic tabs that secure the grills to the bumper. Its awkward but better than painting them on the bumper. For the centre grill you will need to remove the sump cover which you need to do to attach your areo lip anyway. Its worth the effort as the areo lip really makes the SE bumper look good.

I used a feeler gauge to release the clips and then with a bit of wriggling around you can pull it out the front

So. Is it possible to replace these bumper screens from the front of the car?
Not needing to mess up with wheels and removing the bumper?
Appreciate your repply, I'm about to order replacement screens from my car, the ones I have are broken in some spots.

Thanks

No need to remove your grills, I borrowed a can of matt black Plastidip from my cousin and sprayed the lower grills directly on the bumper. The kidney grills were removed to make sure all the chrome was hidden when sprayed.

Main thing to do is make sure the plastic grills are clean, dry and degreased. I sprayed the grills 3 times to get a nice uniform finish.

The pictures attached are after 2 coats, you can see around the edges of the two outer lower grills I accidentally removed the masking tape before the rubber Plastidip spray dried. On the third layer of spraying these areas were addressed.

I'd say it took me approximately 1 hour to do this and I'm pleased with the outcome.
