Don't have the settlement yet, so plan to do some test driving today. Going to romp on a jeep grand cherokee srt-8 for fun first. MDX, Q5, v6 jeep, glk, and even a highlander are on the list since we've never looked at them.

My parents have a xc60, and i did not like it. Not sure what engine, but i thought it was crap. And interior was no good.

Id love an x6, but way too much. In the top running currently is probably x3 unless something else really impresses us.

How about a murano or RX350 CPO. Lexus program is damn near bumper to bumper and 3y from purchase and 100k miles.

Good luck

If the CTS V is outta your range, try a regular CTS Wagon with the 3.6L. You could probably find one with low miles and a warranty in your range.

My dad has an previous body style RX350 and its an excellent SUV. Perfectly sized, good looks, good power, good mileage, very reliable. On top of that, it's probably the best riding SUV money can buy. Sooooo comfy

LOL well as much as I do love Top Gear (and I do!) if we all just went off their standards we would be driving either a SLS AMG or a Veyron. And I can't afford $50,000 for tires every 16,000 miles.

Ouch! I recognize this is on Mill and Southern, I pass by there everyday. Hope your wife is okay..

What I would buy in no particular order: GLK, W164 or W166 ML, GL, E70 X5, F25 X3

If you do decide CPO BMW, Chapman BMW has a BMW CCA discount on cars

Good luck!

We need something that will fit a kid and dog separately but fun to drive. Really wanted a X5 before, but really didn't like it... you have to get the v8 to enjoy in my opinion and the upgraded interior (seats mainly).

So used around 09 give or take
FX35... maybe again, but the back is really too small
Q5: no idea, haven't driven yet
x3: I like a lot, but would prefer the new 2011 interior
GLK: looks kinda goofy, but fits our needs... driving position could be a little high
A4 or 328 wagons: I like them a lot, but hard to find.
Forester??: probably shouldn't consider
x5: may try it again

What else... driving fun is really important for long trips. need to be around 30Kish... could probably spring for a little more if I loved the car.

probably not the right section for this really... opps
Women and SUVs don't work well together in my opinion. I see them on the road every day trying to maneuver and park these beasts. I personally would always go for 5 series, A6 and even MB E wagons. They have plenty of space and better handling than most SUV in this price range. I don't understand people that buy SUVs to ride on hwy or in urban areas.

Pre-owned 5 series wagon all day long ...

Try to squeeze your budget for an X5 35 with the turbo 6 - it's torque makes it very close to a V8, much better than the N/A 6 in the 3.0's. Otherwise I recommend a 535xi wagon.

The Conclusion

So basically the decision process was not based on research, but more feeling and first impression. Had no intention to purchase yesterday, but I was partially worried about market effects due to Sandy… after getting news of one of the cars on our list being shipped to the East Coast. Anyway to the options:

Q5 2.0L: not enough engine. Truthfully at first I was a little turned off by the electronics… don’t seem to be too intuitive. This one had navy and stuff.

ML350: Looked at a couple ML350, but didn’t like the interior (seat position mainly).

Outback: Next test drive was a Subie outback 3.6R… 6cyl. Found it at the BMW dealer, which didn’t have much selection of BMW pre-owned. This car was actually very nice… the driving/seat position was good and comfy. It was decked out navy and stuff. I wanted to make a deal on this car, but during the test drive got a bad feeling of the overall condition. It had a lot of warranty left, but I can’t purchase if there’s any concerns during a test drive. Straight line this car was pretty good… in the turns sucked (a lot of body role). But for a long drive, this car would be comfortable and engine was pretty smooth.

GLK350: Next was the GLK which price point, warranty, options was great… I thought this was the car before the test drive. Didn’t like it… it was a combo driving position, seats, steering. The engine was good though.

RDX: everything about the car on paper worked for us, and even sitting inside (although not the most comfy). BUT the engine sucked super ass… too lagy, narrow power band… hated it.

Porsche Cayenne: 06 v8 with 50k miles for $35k. Seemed like a pretty good deal with certified warranty for 1 or 2 more years. Interior is kinda old, and the thing is huge… and didn’t fit me too well (6’6”)… but 911s do… I thought that was weird.

So we were on a mission to find another Outback… could not, 2 6cyl had deposits. 4cyl wasn’t an option and for some reason we were very set on having navy with this car… BTW: the Q5 we purchased has NO navy.

MDX: at first we did not consider because of the size… but the size isn’t so big, they just have great use of interior space which makes it seem bigger IMO. After driving all the other cars, we went back to the MDX and the driving position, comfort is very nice. Most had the tech package too, so we really liked it… until the test drive. Nothing too horrible, just slow, the tranny wasn’t very smooth (at least the 2 we drove)… the suspension was a little soft for me also. And the ones we drove had a lot of road/tire noise.

The plan was to regroup for tomorrow looking for Subies and MDXs and maybe considering some other hatchbacks (Impreza was in my head).

Q5 3.2L: On the way home decided to stop by one last place… 8pm to see the v6 Q5. Engine is great, tranny very good… sport mode is very responsive and regular is smooth. The ride firm, but not harsh. The women gave me the nod that she liked it… these are good signs.

2011 x3: We bothered the sales guy with test driving the x3… only 1500miles. Did not like it after driving the Q5, which I liked the x3 in the past so I took this as a sign to pull the trigger.

It was late, everyone wanted to go home, so it was easy to understand their bottom line. No navy and fairly bare in options I think… ie no cam or parking sensors. Not sure if the stereo is upgraded or not, but sounds pretty good. Anyway 09 25K miles, factory warranty until Aug ‘13 for $28,500. Think we did good.

So our cars are:
09 Q5
08 E90 335i FBO, meth, E85
05 Tacoma pre-runner

That’s my story.

Thanks for the reviews. We are going to test drive the Q5 when the wifey has time. I hope before I replace the timing belt and water pump on the MDX!

Or you could have been like my grandma of a mother and purchased a new Honda CR-V 5 years ago. Ugly car, slow, but the one thing I am in awe by is the fact that she just passed 100,000 miles, and she literally hasn't had a single problem. Only the regular tires, shocks, struts, brakes. Oh Hondas..
