It isn't that of a problem! Just wash your car (incl underneath wash) regulary and you'll be fine

These cars are made in Germany... They know salt...

18" 225/40-18 snows for when you get stuck out in the snow with the 335, and a beater for when you plan ahead to drive in the snow.

Beaters for me.... Picked up a 2002 explorer 4x4, and a 2001 pontiac grand am for less than 5500. This will be my 2nd winter with them and they have been good to me. Just does not seem practical driving around in my 335i, even with snow tires.

I have an older Volvo wagon -- with snow tires and cloth heated seats. There are other things it's good for besides snow, like trips to Home Depot & Costco, railroad station parking lots, etc.

It's invisible, driving it qualifies me to have my picture put on a milk carton.

I had a chance to score a 1999 wagon. All options, new engine with only 50k on the clock.
I passed it up, and now I kick myself in the ass for doing so.

Blizzak LM 60s for me

The beater is for my daughter in college ('04 Rav4) and I'll have another daughter driving in two yrs so another beater in the drive way.

I bought a 97 528i for my beater to replace my 09 e92 when the weather is bad it's nice having options on what to drive and keep miles and wear and tear off my e92

Very interesting question, I just spent a fair amount of change on a set of 18" O.Z. Ultraleggera's and 225/40/18 Dunlop Winter Sport 4Ds for my 328i Touring M-sport/6MT, about a week later saw an ad on craigslist for a '92 Range Rover in relatively good nick for about what I paid for the wheels/tires.

Had I seen the ad before getting the tires I'd've strongly considered the Rangie. Jeremy Clarkson said of this vintage Range Rover at the end of the Bolivia special:

"We've proven, that the least-reliable car in the world, is actually the most reliable car in the world."

I know though that had I bought the Rangie that the purchase price would most definitely not have been the total expenditure, I'd've bought winter tires for it and the maintenance would likely cost $2-3k a year. Would be able to go almost anywhere though.

Recommend the beater if your commute is long especially..and if you plan on purchasing extended warranty to 100k..Much easier to damage a car in bad wintermix conditions..and the salt will corrode aluminum parts, brake components, etc.. A good beater can pay for itself if it helps to keep the bimmer under warranty longer.

I take mass transit about 30 miles all week to the city- long commutes are not an issue, well at least not in my car

I just purchased my first Beamer its and XDrive and am debating whether or not to sell my current beater (2002 Cavalier Z24). I would probabaly get $1500 if I was lucky.

I live in Canada, some winters are bad but last winter wasn't bad at all.

What do you all think. I don't know if it's worth it to insure two vehicles.

Privately (depending on mileage, I chose 50,000 miles to see your estimated private party sell value), you you get around 6,000 bones (assuming it HAD 50,000 on the clock.)

Lol no way I would get $6000. My car has 190000 Kilometers which is probably 110000 miles. Although, that would be sweet if I did. It's a two door..

I punched it in Kelly's as well and it came out $3300. The vehicle is in OK condition and it's a manual. Maybe I could get more than I thought...

Anyone wanna buy a 2002 cavalier!?

Cars have come a long way in the past few decades... now a German car from the late 60's or early 70's, that will rust if you look at it funny... but even VWs from the early-mid 80's on seem to be fairly corrosion resistant, the undercoat the Krauts use, that waxy stuff, is better than anything that we use over here. My mom drove and '86 Golf for years and while toward the end stuff was failing that just happens when you have tons of years and miles on a car (like a spring breaking just while driving along) the body was still in pretty good shape. My dad painted it once due to some rust finally starting in random places like around the hatch handle but it was really mostly good, and my parents live in western PA, about the worst possible place you can imagine for road salt/rust (because often the temps oscillate back and forth around freezing in the winter, so you can get salt water solution thrown up in all the nooks and crannies, and then it'll get "warm" before you have a chance to wash it off.)
