problem carbon fibre

Hi guys,

I purchased a cf grill and side view mirror caps about 2 years ago and I noticed just recently some problems with the clear coat.

Problems:
1) The CF grill looks okay except for one fin has the clear coat peeling.

2) The side view mirrors have started to have the clear coat separating and spots appearing. I do find it odd that the rest of the grill and one fin are perfect so it seems it is a lack of consistency in the quality of the clear coat.

Bimmian has offered a 20% discount on replacement parts and stated:
"I apologize that this has happened. These products are now 2 years old and have been exposed to the elements/car washes etc for that period of time. This can happen with Carbon Fiber parts as they are very fragile. They are really "show Car" parts and can be worn out by the sun and weather after prolonged exposure."

Questions:
1) what do you think of bimmian's stance?
2) Any tips on how to resolve or if this is normal?
3) Any suggestions on replacements parts that are higher quality?
4) Lastly, I have to replace my pair of CF Lips as my girlfriend had a bit of an accident with my car :P... so should I go with something from bimmian (although quality issues mentioned above concern me) or shall I get stock BMW performance parts (if they sell)?
5) anyone know where I can find what BMW/OEM parts are for accessories?

Bimmian's stance is in a way somewhat right.

Yes, CF epoxy chips easily, but it depends on the quality of the epoxy as well. There are different strength grades of epoxy resin. A good epoxy resin (e.g. structural Sika epoxy) would be able to handle weathering and impact much better than a cheap epoxy resin.

Of course, using structural epoxy for a mirror cover might be overkill. Structural CF epoxy (e.g. Sikadur 30) is the kind of epoxy you'd use for bridge deck repairs to bond CF to concrete. Your grills and mirror covers are a cosmetic part and if they were to use such a high strength epoxy, the price would be a lot more.

In my opinion, it's probably cheaper for you to buy a new replacement set as opposed to fixing them yourself with epoxy and trying to sand/polish it down.

Thanks for feedback and opinion.

Do you think the OEMs are higher quality and use a higher grade of epoxy? Are they worth it?

Yes. Rep CF parts and OEM CF parts are nowhere near the same quality. You're talking the difference between a corporation in a factory producing parts and some dude in an alley way in asia laying down strips of CF in epoxy filled molds.
