I would go with the Kenwood Echelon. Comes with more built in features compared to the Pioneer.

What are the side effects? From what I've been told/read, the Kenwood/Pioneer units work flawlessly with the steering wheel controls.

The only negative for me is it's a bit lower dash, but who really stares at the GPS for that long anyway?

If you do your homework

If you have BMW assist it will not longer work .
If will may cause errors to your dash that won't reset.
Your BMW dealer will no longer be able to change the software
on the car if you need updates to the software or if you replace a module
that requires that software values be loaded to it.
For this reason you need to mount the old unit in the trunk .
If you look at that first link about relocating the old radio to the trunk some of the problems are listed .
There was a guy on here that bought a car used with and aftermarket deck
who had the anti lock brake module fail. He took it to BMW when they replaced the module they could not write the new software values to the module without the BMW radio installed. This is a known problem at least keep the old radio if you need it for this later.
There were guys on here with HPFP failures having to remount there radio multiple times to get the software updated.

Ah.... fortunately for me I have a 328! :-D. So it's worthwhile to keep the radio just in case.

Let me know if you find a good install guide for aftermarket headunit. I have a Kenwood 8120 but steering wheel controls do not work.
