Another Exploding Sunroof
Driving on the freeway at 70 miles an hour and boom, another victim of the exploding sunroof. Glass shows outward movement like explosion came from inside the vehicle.
2007 E90 335i Sunroof, shade (luckily) and all windows closed. No cars in front of me, some paint damage on rear of vehicle where the glass struck. Can't wait to see what BMW service has to say about this one. 4500 miles and the list has started. Broken sunroof, cupholder (yes I know, who cares) and subwoofer not working after being on for 20 mins (still waiting on replacement amp) |

Just freaky. Never heard of this on any car and this is now, what, the 3rd or 4th one here?

wow. wonder if it was caused by a rock or some other debris striking the roof at a particular angle. But no cars in front huh. Over pass? Bird?

This sunroof thing is getting bizarre. I don't know how many times this has happened to forum members, but you would think the worldwide occurrence rate of an "exploding sunroof" would be like .00001%.
Sorry dude, hang in there.

Why can't they have a delete sunroof option in the US?
Every time I hear something flex in the car I wonder if glass will be raining down shortly thereafter...

Another one???
Could you explain if you did anything before it exploded? Like were the other windows rolled up and then you closed the sunroof? I know when i do that the cabin pressure feels different. I feel it in my ears actually. I've been concerned about this for quite some time. I love having the sunroof open. Everytime i close my sunroof i crack the window open a little bit just so it doesn't feel like there's a weird pressure in the cabin. I dunno..i may be crazy, but i really don't want to see this happen. |

I'm starting to think that the cause of this is for people who drive with the TILT of the sunroof alot. I noticed that the tilt on e90/e92 sunroofs are on a steeper angle making it ride against the wind more.

I've never heard of this before joining this forum, but after reading this thread I did some searching and found it seems to be somewhat common. I did also find that most dealerships said something must have hit it to get out of paying for it, even though it exploded outwards..
Do a google or yahoo search for exploding sunroof, lots of stories..

I doubt that as most cases have been from the sunroof closed. My theory is just a weak sunroof, it happens to many brands actually. We just don't hear about it much. My friend's Camry (Pre 07) exploded too. |

Weird man... why doesn't BMW use glass that is shatter proof? It sounds like either impact by some foreign object against the sunroof or some weird flexing of the roof panel is putting pressure on the sunroof itself.
Really wish they did the sunroof delete since I'm not big on this option anyway.
