E92 Lease is up...thinking about E39 M5? Thoughts?

Hey guys, my lease is up in a month and I was thinking about picking up a low mileage '03 E39 M5. What are your thoughts? Anyone who has come from an E39? I track my car pretty often, and I know its an M5, but I am worried about it not being as sharp and fun as my car on the track. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I think you should purchase your car off-lease. You already said you're worried about the next car not being as sharp or fun.

I had an 02 e39 m5. Loved it. Great daily driver. A bit heavy for track car. Had a 350z for weekend track car when I had my e39. Maintenance got pretty hefty which is why I sold her. That and known VANOS failures in early models spooked me. Clutches are pretty weak too if your getting a manual. I went through a couple of clutches. First one was on BMW but the second was out of pocket. Sold her at 80k miles and it was already needing 3rd clutch replacement. And yes I know how to drive a manual lol. It's all I drive. So all in all, if you got the dough to back it up pick it up, if not pass.

E39s are fun cars but as mentioned the maintenance will hurt. I had a very well maintained 03 E39 with low miles (under 85k when I sold it in Feb of this year) and in the last 6 months of ownerwhip I spent over $4,000 on repairs (that's 90% indy, 10% stealership). They are great cars (if a bit heavy) but once they start going downhill they will rob you blind. Right about the time the car hit 80k miles the shit hit the fan. Oil leaks, Vanos, electrical gremlins, intake manifold, water pump, and pulleys/belts all took a dump at the same time.

My cousin bought one 2 years ago on eBay for 28k. He likes it, but doesn't love it. Says it's a big car that goes fast. But he came from an M3 which he preferred. Wife made him get a 4 dr.

To go from an E92 to a E39 is going backwards in evolution. 400 HP is 400 HP, but HP isn't everything.

I saw a 2001 M5 yesterday in a parking lot. Car was beautiful, blue with the black seats with the blue inserts. I would have sold my car on the spot to that that baby home. Aluminum trim, nav, in love

One of these cars of of warranty is big bucks when things need fixing. That's a large part of why their value depreciates so rapidly after a few years.

the entire e39 lineup is my second favorite BMW models. (1st is the e30 m3). but getting an old e39 m5 as your only car is a terrible decision in my opinion. I would love to have another e39 (m5 or not), but only as a second car and/or project car. i had an e39 and it was one of the most fun cars to drive... but then when it hit close 100k miles, i stopped driving it because it was always in the shop getting something replaced/repaired. mainly electrical stuff which are a complete nightmare to diagnose and fix.

The E39 M5s are great and fun to drive. However, because they werent broken in correctly by many owners, many leak oil. Make sure to get it checked.
