NI/UK Car - problems trading-in?

My Zed is a UK car sourced from a Nissan Main Dealer in NI. I've for the first time started to receive problems when discussing a trade-in i.e. refusal to take it!

I'm explaining fully the background of my car upfront so there no surprises. The car was reregistered on the 'mainland' when I bought it over.

They're refusing on the grounds it's an import which it isn't but think the DVLA records indicate it is (might try to call them direct to see what they say). It's a UK car, on UK plates (well it will be once my private plate is removed) with a UK V5.

Anyone had any issues with this before or am I just on an unlucky streak of dealer speaking to the wrong traders?

Never had this before!

It is just ignorance on the part of the dealer, the car is a UK car so there is absolutely no problem. They will be seeing it as an Irish car which it isn't because NI is of course part of the UK. Many NI cars are registered from new in Swansea anyway as its all part of the same system.

That's what I thought. To be fair, as in talks with VW, they don't really want a Nissan on their forecourt so are looking to off-load it; guess the traders just can't be arsed with the potential 'unjustified' hassle. We'll see.

Just to confirm what Davyk31 was saying, I got my car tax renewal this morning and it was posted from Swansea (my car was registered in 2008).

Just tell your dealer they are wrong but no worries you will look elsewhere and watch them suddenly get over their mistake.

Letting it go to trade will be poor money, can you not sell private or sell to another dealer for a bit more cash.

I had the same problem with a NATO tax free car. It too was a UK car with a V5 but it said on the V5 something like Manufactured 2007, First registered 2008, Number of previous keepers unknown and it was that statement which was confusing dealers on trade in.

I called DVLA and they have a special investigations dept who sorted it all out.

When you say 'sorted it all out' what exactly do you mean?? Did they just update the online systems or replace the V5?? Might try to call them on Monday.

I have never come across something this before. So its interesting.

Whilst I fully agree with the other posts about there being no difference etc. I am slightly confused as to, if its all the same, then how comes we have DVLA and NI and DVLNI?

is this whats causing the issue?

All the best o.p does this mean the 370 vert is going?

...not at this fecking rate!! I'm on the hunt for something else (either more efficient or more practical not necessary both together!). If more efficient then great I'll use it all the time (but will it keep me I interested?) but if not, so long as it has more seats, I can just use the super efficient QQ but still live the wife with something to ferry the kids around in. I'll only change of the figures stack up so we'll see.

The wording on that V5 is odd, the document looks exactly like the ones issued in NI now which of course are a UK V5. However it normally says something like declared new at first registration in N Ireland and then also gives previous keeper details. Your car was from memory a dealer demo therefore the V5 should declare it new at first reg in NI and list the dealer as first keeper. Looks like the DVLA have made a mistake in their records as that wording would resemble a car imported as used to the UK.

Yeah, kept meaning to say that when it was bring re-registered onto the mainland, the DVLA lost everything. It wasn't until a few months later I realised I'd not received the V5. When I called DVLA that had no idea what I was talking about so they literally knew nothing about the car nor did they have any paperwork.

Luckily I had the receipt of the tax disc I bought on the day I dropped the paperwork at the DVLA office so could at least prove that their office had seen the paperwork (otherwise they'd not have issued me one). They got me the V5 pretty quickly after that but hadn't noticed the odd wording.

I'll call DVLA tomorrow and see what light they can shed.

I managed to get the V5 details changed by sending a letter to the DVLA when they put the wrong keeper on. They were pretty easy to deal with but it did take a while.

its that section 3 thats the problem. The DVLA after support from the manufacturer to show that it was a UK supplied car and first registered in the UK removed the note -- the one it says cant be removed.

it wasnt quick though.. not sure thats a help if you''re trading it. It took about 4 months for resolution and issue of a new v5.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Might be something I start off, it certainly won't harm, might take 4 months anyway (plus Ill need a new V5 anyway when I take my reg plate off).

Would like to know a bit more detail - how did the running around, did you get the evidence from the manufacturer or the DVLA, what was it the DVLA they required, etc.
