Hey guys. Ive been lurking in here since I bought a 2010 d in march. For the first few months it ran great, but the ses light came on and I took it in for service. Injector 2 needed to be replaced, along with the recall update. Since then the ses light has come on another 2 times both times saying injector 2 was faulty. So after the third time BMW NA got involved. BMW San Diego has had the car for a week now, and this last Friday I got a call from the s.a. Who said the car needed a new "dde". I said wtf is that? She said it basically is the cars ecu, and she had to order from Deutschland herself. Lol I'm supposed to have it back by this week. It's completely stock, but I bought it as a used lease car so who knows if it was modified before, but I don't know. I'd love to jbd it with the Wagner i.c. But now I'm a little hesitant. I don't know what the car will do next. I've got the cpo with service warranty so that's that. Basically Im just venting. But any similar experiences? And suggestion?

That's what it is, she gave you the correct answer.

I don't recall reading of any d owners needing to have the ecu replaced. It might be worthwhile to search the N54/55 sections just to see if there are any records of the gassers having it replaced.

Sounds rare for a DDE a.k.a. ECU to go wrong on ONLY one code, doesnt sound right

That's odd. Glad you're under warranty, but sorry to hear its been such an issue for you. Once she's back in your hands, I would definitely give it a little bit of time to ensure that the gremlins are gone before moving on to the tune.

I just bought an '09 and had it at the dealer three times in two weeks. The code that keeps showing up is #1 cylinder injector. Last week, the dealer finally replaced the injector and all has been good until tonight... SES is on again and I suspect I will see the same code.

The technician commented that the swirl ports were very dirty so the manifold was cleaned. Hopefully not related, but thought I would share.

Hey Deed. I pulled a "swirl flap actuator" code last month and my SA told me what yours told you. They actually replaced my air intake manifold. (under warranty)

Wow that sounds similar to my problems deed. In fact when they were in the process of replacing the injector the technician noted the intake was clean with no soot deposits or damage. I did get my car back on 10/3. I turned it over on 9/20. Thirteen days to get it fixed. Apparently they ordered the dde from Germany, which was delivered to new jersey for programming, then down to me in cal. For install, and additional programming for the car. All in all almost two weeks. Nevertheless car feels good again. Till next time ses light

I think the soot may be caused by just the opposite. The previous owner was an older gentleman that apparently babied it. Maybe the key is to run the snot out of it!?!

There you go that could of been the issue, it also happens on gassers!! Go ahead and STEP on it and feel the rush!!!!

I give my car about 5 minutes (a little longer if it's cold out) for the engine/coolant temps to come up and mesh. After that, I beat that bitch like I'm mad at it.

This sounds very similar to my experience, except I'm the idiot who babied the car for the first 57,000 miles. After that it was in the shop every 5,000-10,000 miles with SES lights for repeated rounds of injector replacements.

They put in a new DDE in November, and since then no SES lights but I'm still concerned. No one seems to know if the bad DDE was the issue or something else caused the DDE to fail.

Corbin, have you seen any other issues since the DDE replacement? Deed, have you had any more SES issues?

ses only came once more, and that was for a coolant sensor. unrelated. I think we have the same issue to a "t". but 3 months no injector or computer problems leads me to believe the issue was resolved by the dde replacement......so far so good.

Check out burger motorsports, the jbd module if you dont already have one. ive "heard" you can set it to 80% and run the poop out of it with no ses or limp codes. All of this after your piece of mind has been restored by a few months of solid normal performance.

Thanks for the reply, corbin. It looks like 135i_vs_ also had the DDE replaced and saw issues afterwards. My intervals between injector failures go up to 11,000 miles so I'm not sure when I can start trusting it.

Yep, my DDE was replaced, along with few injectors, except SES kept coming back. Last diagnosis from BMW Regional Engineer is the Engine Harness. This would be the 5th time at the dealer, 90+ days in service for these issues. I am supposed to have the car back next week...lets see how it goes.

So far no diagnosis has been to check for carbon build up.

I just feel like parts are thrown at the 335d; injectors, DDE, this and that...

Yes, I am under the lemon law, still.
However, I like the 335d. No point in giving it back to get another 335d which will have similar problems.

If I wasn't under CPO, I would tear it up in my garage like a "two cent wh0re & beat it with a wrench" and fix everything myself. Lol. However, I don't want to touch the car for any repairs, as they can void the whole CPO warranty. BMW's problem, not mine to fix right now.

I've been a Bimmer'holic for the last 20 years and have had huge urges to pick up a 335D. I travel 75+ miles per day for my commute and love the idea of Diesel economy with the thrill of BMW performance.

I've driven a couple BMW Ds over the the years. An e46 320d as a rental in Europe back in 2002. And a couple 335D loaner cars more recently. I'd been waiting for them to fall down into the ~$25k price range for a nice used one.

However to be honest, all of these poor reviews and carbon issues have me very very hesitant to touch this car.

I'm sure it is an intoxicating ride...but given all of these issues..how many of you would want to own this car out of warranty?

Starting to sway towards a jetta TDI. Then again, they have their HPFP issue.

I am at only 10k so don't need to worry for a few years, but if I were at about 40-45k I would probably pay for a dealer or reputable indy to assess intake, injectors, carbon build up and make my extended warranty decision based on that. And if necessary get a walnut shell blasting at that time. From what I see At this point, nothing is available that I would want to own. If all hell broke loose I would probably head for either a VW or Audi TDI. Meanwhile I am investing big bucks in my D. Slightly unnerving, but oh well. I might get hit by a bus or die of some surprise ailment before then too. Sorry to be macabre, but am a bit older than most of you guys. So I don't get as frazzled by this stuff as much any more.

I think the key is to find one that had the recall done early. Also if you check the service records and the car hasn't had any of these issues then that should give you peace of mind.

There are people out there with high mileage and no issues.
