Six weeks for a rattle!

Following on from this thread, if the latest fix works then the dealer will have had my car for six weeks. I'll give them credit, they're being extremely thorough this time and are obviously tackling the problem with a 'it has to be right' 'money no object' approach. BMW will be getting billed thousands in labour and parts for this work.

The purpose of this thread isn't really to tell you what they've tried so far (but I can bore you with that if you like) or to rant about the dealer or the car but to question why after so many previous trips to the dealer they're going to so much effort this time?

Now I've heard in the past that Audi have a three fix policy ie three goes at fixing and if they can't then the car is gone. I've come across this more than once and if it isn't an urban myth I'm guessing other manufacturers have a similar policy on the quiet. In my case I'm obviously thinking about BMW.

What are the thoughts of the E90Post collective? Am I just being suspicious for no reason? Are BMW just trying to keep a customer happy? Or are they trying to avoid a situation that could involve a finance agreement being torn up and a car going back?

Would make more sense to ask them really.

My previous car went back 13 times for a dash creak and they never fixed it. Just read your thread. It was the same problem!

Well at this point no it wouldn't. The car is a BMW from a main BMW dealer with contract hire arranged through the dealer and Alphabet who are part of BMW Finance. There's a certain BMW bias I think you'll agree. I'm not saying I want to reject the vehicle, I just wondered if any members had any insight. How long should I let this go on for before either I or the dealer say enough is enough.

If this latest fix works after the parts have arrived from Germany (again!) then fair enough but you'd be amazed at what's been done so far. As far as the three strikes thing is concerned it turns out it's straight forward Sale of Goods Act stuff and nothing to do with a manufacturers policy. A little Googling brings up some good info from Honest John and elsewhere. I just want to know where I stand in case this does turn a little unpleasant.

Oh dont get me wrong, i think you are 100% right in questioning it. Maybe a letter to BMW HQ explaining your experiences may shed a bit more light on it. If it was me, i would be furious. You sir, have the patients of a Saint.

It's now eight weeks.

The dealer, BMW and the lease company are all now fully aware of the situation.

Have they still not found the problem yet?

After 8 weeks it is time to give up.

Nope, still haven't found it. And you wouldn't believe the list of parts and man hours they've spent.

I agree that we're reaching the point of no return and I've made that clear to all concerned. But all is sweetness and light because this is not the time to make enemies.

I do sympathise with you.

My car has had numerous rattles, whittles, creaks, clicks etc... for the last year (from when the car was 3 months old) which the dealer does not seem to be able to fix to my satisfaction. So emailed BMW customer service with a complaint about this. And for good measure emailed Richard Price, Customer Director too. My ideal outcome would be a contribution towards another new 3 series as I'm getting a little pi55ed off with mine now, but not sure how far I'll get with that.

I've always found that the more they take to bits the more creaks & rattles they introduced, so it's always a bit of a catch 22 situation :-(

I reckon you should take Palmnuts who posts on here with you next time you go to the dealers. Last time his car developed a rattle, he managed to persuade them to replace it with an XKR-S

Well it's finally sorted.

It was originally suggested by members on here last year that the issue was broken spot welds and indeed that's what it is. 10 weeks on and I'm still not back in the car but at least it's finally getting fixed.

However, I don't care because BMW have agreed to cancel the existing contract hire agreement and I'm free to choose a new car. I have an appointment tomorrow at Sytner Sheffield to do just that.

I should also add once again that Sytner Sheffield have been superb. I can not praise them enough. They have gone way beyond what I expected of them. Scott Walker, Paul Godbehere and Nigel Marsh. You're all on my Christmas card list.

To be honest I'm looking at something a little more like a saloon, with less diesel involved but more cylinders
