Potentially daft question regarding head units

My car has got a single slot DVD head unit which runs both the sat nav DVD and any potential CD I might want to play.

I think this is down to the sat nav installation in my car being the business rather than pro.

Is it too simple for me to think that I could switch out the single slot head unit in my car and replace it with one of the dual slot ones and that everything would continue to work with the sat nav DVD continuously loaded and me free to also play CDs without having to worry about storing the sat nav DVD and having to put up with no maps when a CD is playing?

This seems like an incredibly strange design by BMW to me, having to switch out the sat nav DVD everytime I want to play a cd, and a step back from my previous E46 where the sat nav DVD was dealt with in the boot.

I've tried to do some research on this but couldn't seem to find an answer to that exact question when I was looking.

Any info appreciated

wow really is that how your car is set up? definitely poor design by BMW mate i never realised they did that!

mine has two slots! a CD one up top and DVD slot at the bottom...

strange! i would have atleast thought that if it was single that there would be a CD changer somewhere in the car? glove box or boot?

Yep!

I didn't even think to question it when I bought the car as would never have thought to look for two slots on a head unit, or make the assumption that one would have to do both and couldn't do the two things concurrently

You can swap, but you would need a new screen as well.
Different resolutions.

If you were to swap better to go for the much later, current style CIC Nav system.

You could just get the usb/ipod adapter fitted to yours, far more useful than CD.

Ahh ok, that sounds like it would likely be an expensive job to change to the whole new HD system

Did do a bit of research into a UBS port, but that again seemed to be quite expensive with an extra module being required.

Maybe an iPod input and a new ipod nano to leave in the car is what I should be looking for.

This is clearly going to lead to me thinking that I should up rate the base speakers as well if I'm going to poke about at it

Enter the last 7 digits of your chassis number on realoem and you will have your build month.

Ahh yes, keep forgetting about that site.

Production date the same as build date I assume? If so, 11/4/2008.
