It's not real leather like Audi or Porsche, but neither is Dakota really. Thats plastic coated too.
You make a good point. Leather is not leather these days. Its a veneer of leather bonded to a synthetic fabric and dyed to look perfectly uniform. In summer, both are miserable.

Now perforated merino leather on the other hand. That is niiiiice. And it smells so good, years later.

FWIW, the leather in my Audi is no more convincing than any other.

If it hadn't cost extra I'd have had trouble believing it even was leather.

I had leatherette in my 08 335xi and I absolutely hated it. It got all scraped up really quick.

Leathers top coat tends to stretch because bmws leather has multiple layers and is not 100% leather. The leatherette is actually more durable and does NOT stretch over time like leather would. also leather smells bad if your 1 a Smoker or 2 drive in a hot weathered place..
Leatherette is also waterproof vs the Leather is NOT.. glue from the layers cause wear out over time from your sweaty ass or heat.
and MOST important of all if you clean the leather too much or abrasive you can tear it or wash away the color layer of the leather... and leather STAINS EASY leatherette you can wash away no problem...

Hope this review helps Ive had 2 bmws with leather and 2 with leatherette.

2017 X5 with Leatherette

I just bought a 2017 X5 that I insisted have leather interior. The salesman assured me that the car had leather seats so I didn't investigate too closely. After having the car a couple of weeks, I started noticing that the seats didn't feel like my past cars. The grain was too uniform the seams looked different, etc. I've only had the car for a couple of months but I guess I'm stuck with it since I didn't notice the seats until after I signed the paperwork. I'm just surprised that the salesman lied about the seats. True... there were no other cars on the lot that had all the features I wanted, but still... any suggestions?
Lesson learned: Be sure to check everything before signing the papers on a car... even if it is brand new. Don't trust the salesperson.
This will be my first car with fake leather seats. The upside is that I have a dog so I don't have to worry about covering the seats before taking him places. Slim silver lining but I'll take it... as I have no other choice.

Dakota leather is nice. I have it in my f10 and its fairly tough, hold up well. just make sure to condition and clean it often especially if it is a light colour like beige

I just bought a used 2006 E90 with Dakota Leather, and it still looks brand new.

I also didn't like the moisture build-up from sweating on the leatherette.

I would vote for leather.
Had the exact same sport seats on my 08 E90, the bolster cracked on the thigh bolster, and sweaty for sure during the summer. They do look completely new still but nothing beats a natural material.

Swapped them out for Dakota sport seats last summer..

Agree completely. If you condition it a couple of times per year, it holds up and feels great. Mine was almost as good as new after 8 years and 125K miles. The only problem I had was that it stretched a bit on the driver's side cushion.

My E46 had leatherette that the dealer had poorly refinished, it started to flake and was a eye sore. My E92 has leather Sport seats and shows very little wear. You can bet that I'll condition it regularly.
