I'd say whichever has a locking gas door, is the better car (I just don't understand sometimes how Americans cheap out on simple things).

C350? It's so ridiculous that it's sad.

They'll probably call it m-ATS or ATS-m....haha.

Yup, expect a twin-turbo V6, probably with an 8 speed auto.

I'll probably be moving to GM when the warranty on my 335 runs out. I'm much more familiar with American cars and if it drives as well as they say, I won't have a problem. I've driven the CTS-V many, many times and always came away impressed. Liked it much better than the E60 M5.

Garage List
2006 BMW 325i  [0.00]
I drove the ATS when they first hit dealer showrooms. It was a 3.6 AWD model with the auto transmission. I wanted to test the 2.0T RWD with the manual but they weren't out yet.

I have a 2006 e90 with sport package and 6MT right now. I have also driven the F30 328i with the auto.

To be honest both made me want to keep my (or get a newer) e90. The F30 felt too big, the ATS handled better than the F30. It felt more tucked and planted and also more tossable. The F30 wasn't bad, but it felt more like a G37. It pushed back if you really threw it into a turn, but the e90 and ATS are more "eager".

The interiors on both were kind of so so in different ways. My impression of the F30 interior is that it doesn't flow quite right. I don't love the color combos and the "lines" thing BMW is doing. The GM interior flows well and feels more like it "wraps" you, but I'm not a big fan of their use of shiny piano black trim.

The GM v6 had lots of power, but it was (expectedly) not as refined as the N52/4/5. The ride on both the F30 and the ATS was better than my e90, but both use RFT which annoys me. GM seems to be using Michelin RFTs though, so good on them.

The F30 livens up a bit in "sport" mode, but you still get the feeling that its just a bigger car. I think I'll test the ATS again when they have the 2.0 RWD available. It was really quite an impressive car.

IIRC, the ATS won because it had the best chassis, handling, and steering, and was the most fun to drive. The MB was second due to interior and overall quality, but I might be wrong on that one, it has been a while since I watched the video.

The ATS will fail. It is an answer to a question that nobody asked, a car with no consumers.

It feels cramped, has a Cruze+ interior, its 2.0T has so-so efficiency (19mpg city in manual) and too priced.

Recipe for failure. Like the Regal. What was GM thinking?

The Holden Commodore (aka G8, Caprice) should have revived as a SS-something.

I like the ATS in general, but there are no real performance options on it. Depending on how consumers see the car overall that will determine if they like it or not.

I spent some time with a CTS V coupe and had a really fun time. I may want to go with them as well. I have heard some horror stories about the reliability of the CTS as well, but being that I'm a 335 owner. Reliability isn't really too high on my list of priorities I suppose

Really? What about the LSD, Brembo brakes, staggered wheels, magnetic ride control...Seems like there are more performance options for the ATS than F30 or other competitor. Not too mention is comes with the most "sporty" chassis out of the box.

Magnetic ride does not translate automatically to better handling, braking performance can be hindered by weight not just simply because it has factory brembos. Staggered wheels are not really a performance enhancers, most of the time this is for looks. The LSD is pretty much the only thing. When you opt for the V6 you end with automatic only, the cadillac auto isn't the same as DCT or DSG.

Generally, don't all cars have electric throttles these days instead of cable throttles?

I know what you mean though. I like today's cars to be a little more raw. Basically, all cars drive the same nowadays.

True. I agree, I love the N54 engine and thinks it's the one of the best engines BMW has ever made. Some people complain that it is boring and does not have any character. They underestimate its buttery smooth performance.

I'm sorry, but I think it is a question many people have asked. For one, I've asked the question. I've been waiting for a manufacturer to offer a car with BMW handling at 90% of the price of a BMW (and I'd live with 90% of the handling). Cadillac offers the ATS priced right and with better chassis performance. The way I want my version of an ATS optioned; it's perfect. An ATS 2.0T with a sunroof and manual transmission (it actually cost less than the base 2.0L MSRP) gets you the performance stuff that the F30 328i doesn't offer: LSD, and Brembos, in a chassis that handles, steers, and brakes better than the F30 all for $5K less than a 328i Sport Line. The only disappointing thing is you can't get the HIDs without adding a stupid $4K package, but neither does BMW now on the F30.

The 328i 2013 has a 900$ lighting package available.

At best 5000$ is not a significant difference. 328i will recoup a good chunk of of it at resale. I did the pricing too with a manual, sunroof and optional sport pack and I don't see 5000$. At 42500$, the 328i was reasonable, IMO.

ATS 2.0T manual 's 19mpg in city is not very good. It is saved because it runs on regular gas.

At least Caddy seems aggressive on the lease rates.

Yeah, your right it does have a $900 lighting package but that's only after you get the $3,500 lux package, unless BMW changed HIDs as a standalone option in the last few months; so HIDs cost you $4,600 vs. $800 that they were on the E90 as a standalone option.

A 328i Sport Line is $39,000. An ATS 2.0T with sunroof and MT is $34,615. Price difference is $4,385.

And the 328i get 22 city MPG (EPA) but thats with the annoying engine stop function. Put the BMW in engine stop as disabled and I bet it would only get 19 MPG too.

The ATS is a pretty legitimate car from a drivers perspective. I am disappointed in the drivetrain options though, specifically the 2.0 Turbo. When I drove it I was not impressed with the power delivery. Reminded me a bit of what a turbo honda would be like....while that's a bit of an overstatement, the powerband felt narrow and peaky. My mazda has more downlow pull and both run out of steam quickly at high revs.

The V6 is a solid option but not nearly as strong as the 335i. I'm hoping the ATS-V will remedy this. The car overall is on par with the 3 series in terms of quality. I need to drive one again now that i"ve been in and driven a few F30's to compare things like road and wind noise.

No longer the case for 2013, AFAIIK.
