Hi

A quick way a to find out if you have bluetooth is to check in the arm rest. There should be a bluetooth button(the bluetooth symbol)at the top of the phone cradle

If you don't see then you have to have it installed. In South Africa they normally charge double the list price to have it installed.

There are three basic questions to be asked, namely...
  1. Do I have the Car Telephone Preparation (SA640) option installed?
The way to check if you've got it installed is to select the menu option on your radio and goto the Tel option. If you don't have that you probably don't have it. If you want Bluetooth you then have to installed retrofit kit 84 64 0 398 228.

If you want to know for sure if you have bluetooth, goto the dealer and ask him/her to print out your vehicle configuration information from you VIN number. This will tell you exactly what is installed in your car. It also shows you the Production Date

  2. Do I have bluetooth installed already?
If you have the Car Telephone Preparation as described in the previous point, select the Tel option on the Menu and see if you can turn the BT item ON and OFF. If this works you have bluetooth. Now follow the instructions in your manual.

  3. If I don't have bluetooth and I'd like it installed, what do I have to do?
As in point 1, if you have the Car Telephone Preparation installed you can install retrofit kit 84 64 0 398 229, but if you don't you should install 84 64 0 398 228. Just as a side note... the 228 kit is very expensive and takes very long to install due to the number of components.

That only relates to the snap-in adapter assembly, and has nothing to do with having Bluetooth per se. The easiest way to find out is to look on the iDrive menu under Communications.

Thanks a lot. I guess I dont have bluetooth. Overhere in Panama I asked my dealer and they charge $1200 plus labor fee. They have to open the shark fin and install from there down the cars wired and install several modules. My dealer said it would take 3 to 4 days to get it installed!

That's what you have to do if you are not prewired for telephony. It's just too expensive to have upgrade kit 84640398228 installed. Not only is the price of the kit too expensive, but the labour is a killer

Better to put in aftermarket devices.

Better to put in aftermarket devices.
If there going to charge you and arm and a leg.
There has been a lot of discussion about the stuff the goes through the aux.
If you want to get USB, phone, a2dp and bluetooth phone there is now the Dension gateway 500s bluetooth. Its not inexpensive(but way less expensive than OEM) but it covers all that stuff in one device and its all digital and integrates with the existing systems. With existing MOST Bus based systems I understand that its not Most Bus everywhere in the world.
