Plasti Dip on Stock Rims on sgm 335??
I was wondering what your thoughts are
I have on 07 335i with sport package. Its Sparkling Graphite Metallic and I am considering plasti dipping the stock wheels. They have some minor curb rash on the lips and I feel way more comfortable working with something that I can peel off if I mess it up. The Rims I have are the 18" 162. I know I want to plasti dip the kidney grills, but have never seen the rims I have in flat black on the sgm paint. How do you think it will look? Thanks, |

I have 162's on my SGM 330i and I was toying with the idea of painting them black. I just have a problem with flat painted wheels...makes them look really dirty. IF (that is a big if) I decide to recolor my 162s it will be a gloss powder coating. I really like the 162 style.

I agree that having the wheels look dirty would be a pain, but I love the fact that you can peel it off if you don't like the look of black rims, or end up doing a bad job of painting them...

I agree every pic I have seen looks great. I just wish I could find a pic with my rim's and my body color. I'll probably just end up doing it over winter and see how they look on the car come spring time.

I plastidipped my 189's on my sgm 335i. Wished I could find the pics, but it looks GREAT. Definitely do it! Black wheels on a sgm 3 series looks incredible.

Just plastidipped my winter setup for my msport x3 this weekend. the wheels aren't on the car yet, but i'm happy with the results.
i used 4 cans to cover 4 wheels... 1 can per wheel should do the trick. i didn't paint the inner barrel either. Overall, i'm quite happy with how it turned out. there's a good layer of plastidip on the wheels, and they seem pretty sturdy. And as you've said, if you're not happy with the results, you can just peel them off. $40 for 4 cans shipped, fyi.

Just use multiple thin coats to avoid any drips. Your first 2 coats should look about as dark as if you lightly shaded them in with a #2 pencil. That will insure good bonding. On your kidney grills, lci or not idk but I'd recommend removing them from your car an then dismantling them to where you keep the stock black parts and only paint the chrome. However on Lcis every piece has chrome parts of I remember correctly.

Thanks for the tips. I was not aware that the kidney grills came apart, but I will definitely look into it when I do it. I still haven't found a place in town that has the plasti dip in stock.
