Shift boot question

I bought an illuminated M3 shift knob and I have the perforated leather M shifter. I forgot that the boot is attached to the knob. Can I cut the leather on the boot and press the knob down and have it match up to a cut boot some how? The knob doesn't have the metal trim around the bottom.

Not sure of a neat way of doing it but if you want a temporary solution you could use a zip tie on the inside to secure the boot to the new shifter. Fold a small piece, just enough to cover the zip tie so that you don't see it. Perhaps you could make a neat cut and glue it somehow? I'd suggest investing in a nice boot, maybe alcantara?
