Wastegate rattle info needed
Ok I bought a 335 and notice the other day when it's cold I have a wastegate rattle not so loud but its there so I ask my dealer if he can change my turbos, they took the car and told me it was the actuator not the turbos.Ok I have being look around on the site (big props to you guys) and see there is some downs about this fix (1) new software will make the car slower (2) actuators don't really fix the prob,so I would just like to know what to do as I said its not that loud but I want to fix it Before my Warranty runs out.

yea if I was you I would take it to another dealer and try that. Or demand that you dont want to fix "just do the actuators and software update" because thats almost like a band-aid. tell them that a BMW like this shouldnt rattle at all, being a 50K+ car when it was new. Make sure you take anything like a tune or performance related mods off if your trying to get a new set of turbos.

I'm hearing the wastegate rattle on starts almost everytime. Would that be enough for a dealer to replace them? I'm still on my main warranty for 8k more miles and want to get everything addressed while I still have it.

The fix recommended by BMW depends on the production date of the car -- which affects which turbo and wastegate actuator design is on the car. Only the early build N54 cars (built before 9/07) apply for the updated actuator fix. Later cars already have these actuators and will probably need turbos.
The "measuring" the dealer was talking about is checking the wear/play in the wastegate shaft on the turbo itself. The turbos need to be removed to properly measure the wear. Is this car under factory warranty or CPO?

Well, in that case let them do what they want to do. No matter what, you're covered.
They will probably want to take the turbos off and perform the "1.5 mm drill-bit test". It involves removing the E-clip from the wastegate valve, activating the wastegate actuator with a set amount of vacuum and holding the wastegate valve closed by hand. You then check to see if a 1.5 mm drill-bit will slide easily into the gap between the actuator and wastegate arm. If the turbo has a bunch of wear, it will be obvious. The last one I looked at had probably 4X the tolerance allowed by BMW.

So ok they took the car and said they have to change the actuators first but told them not to update the software to the new one cause I read about it making the car has lost in power what do u think.

I'd do the software. Unless you are measuring your 0-60 times or 1/4 miles for more than just bragging rights, the update will improve the operation of your car.
You can still add a JB4 afterward!

That must be a real small BMW dealership if they havent done a turbo swap before considering not only the 335i has this turbo issue but also the 535i ect... Hopefully they know what they are doing otherwise I would drive the extra few miles and go to another BMW dealership that has a tech that knows a good amount about these motors. But either way, your covered because they give a 2 year warranty on the parts they replace.

I took my 335xi 6MT w/70400 miles to the dealership and had them listen to the waste gate rattle after the RPM comes down and the first thing they said to me was "you need new turbos". The car has been in the shop for 3 days with no answer from BMW regarding the measurements and pictures. I am still waiting and hoping they approve the replacement.
I also mentioned the squeal of the brakes at low speeds and they acknowledged this as a known issue with the sensors and not covered by the warranty. They did however replace the rear brake pads and rotors under maintenance to help temp alleviate the problem. Lame that they won't fix this issue. |

Mine just got a fresh set of turbos under CPO because they were troubleshooting another problem and when they checked the wastegates there was a fair amount of play on the shafts. The shop foreman said they weren't rattling yet, but it wasn't going to be long before they started, so they changed them. Only 32k miles. Weird.
