Any use of a machine will degrade it over-time...

That being said there are plenty of tunes available which are considered "safe" for your engine.

The best bang for the buck is a tune, DCI, and Meth kit. 400WHP an alternative is Tune, DCI, and E85 if available for about the same power.

If neither methanol or E85 is an option for you, basic bolt ons, Tune, Intake, Intercooler, Downpipes.

If you need any help on deciding which route to go and options you can PM or Email me at anytime.

If you plan on keeping your car for a long time and want to be at the 400whp level, it's my opinion that you'll really want to go the extra mile on best maintenance practices for your deciding to demand much more from the vehicle than its original engineering specification.

If you keep your car I have the feeling that in 3-4 years you'll laugh a little at yourself by thinking that your tuning choice was primarily influenced by $200 savings...

No matter what mods anyone chooses, like the other said a cheap and easy doesn't apply to this case.

I am in Australia and have an 07 335. JB4 running map 2 (14psi), BMS DCI. My car runs 98 octane constantly and makes serious power. I am just about to invest in some BMS Downpipes, more for the sound than anything... The N54 is a fantastic engine, just change your oil regularily and get involved.
