Headphones

Looking for some suggestions.

Last pair of "monitor" headphones died due to kid input so looking for new ones.

Right now not sure which to go for. Have had a listen to the full size Dr Dre Beats Studio and they sound ideal not mention fit my rather large head.

At same time you hear they are not as good as they seem to be so what are my options £200 is as much as I would want to strech for a set.

The other I've looked at but yet to hear are Bose® AE2 or Sennheiser HD449 (heard the lower spec 429s)

Any ideas would be welcomed.

Hmmmmm.

Don't know much about monitor headphones tbh. I look more for suitabilty for DJ-ing, albeit with a relatively flat response.

On that note, I currently own :

Sennheiser HD 25 II's (2 pair actually, they are awesome)
Allen & Heath Xone XD2-53's.

Would have had the AIAIAI TMA-1's too, but nowhere had them in stock when I was looking

Beats are just a fashion accessory.

The thing I liked about Dres was the bass response others seem to struggle at high volume. No longer need "monitor" in terms of DJ audio but the size yes. Prefer the full size over head as the full Drs or the 449s.

The HD449s where not too bad but at half the price expected.

Never heard of AiAiAi do they do full size and what are they like on base. They will mainly now be used to zone out the noise in the house when working. One of the things the dr dres appealed was they are noise cancelling as well.

So will let me crank up the sound and bass and cut out the kids playing when they are at home

If they are for round the house then I really couldn't recommend some beyerdynamics dt250 80ohm enough

They are without doubt the best headphones I've had. Stunningly accurate and a million miles from beats for sq.

I'm not sure how strong a recommendation this is!

As Dave said, Beats headphones are a massive fashion accessory. Yes they sound ok and on first listen, they are really involving with apparently great bass response, but really, the majority of that bass is based on the fact that they vibrate your damn head! Not a good thing for long term listening. In fact I'm sure I read somewhere that they are tuned to artificially bump the bass and treble just so they sound really energetic and 'pumping', when in actual fact they sound gash.

Plus, they are fooking extortionate for what you get.

I'd be looking at something by Grado, Sennheiser and AKG initially. Best place to look is over at head-fi.org. Their forums give some reasonable recommendations for your money and I'm willing to bet that anything with Dr Dre's name on it gets ripped! I went by their advice on a set of Sennheiser RS180 wireless headphones and they're great! I was really struggling to find a decent set of wireless cans that didn't sacrifice all of the quality for the gimmick of wireless but the Senny's really came in trumps!

Hey, if you want some 'replica' beats headphones, check out that for sale thread!

I had a quick listen to pendulum just. These headphones are the most true replication of sound I've heard in headphones regardless of the music, they are like studio monitors either side of your head.

They are a closed back design so you get good bass impact, against an open design that overcompensates bass for example. It keeps the overll sound balanced. They reproduce bass as the engineer/artist intended it to sound I think.

I always test any speakers or headphones with the Damien rice track, the blowers daughter. In the second verse it has a base sound so low than only good speakers can replicate it with proper conviction. On some budget speakers it doesn't even sound like its there or sounds very thin.

These headphones had no issues reproducing this bass sound, much better than my supposedly good Sennheiser HD 25. The sound is all personal preference tho if you get serious. My sens are quite bright sounding and after prolonged use in clubs gave me tinnitus I think. The beyers are very neutral and I believe make music sound just as it was intended.

You might be used to a slightly coloured sound when listening to your d&b naturally favouring headphones that over emphasise the bass. I certainly wouldn't discount the beyers, they are much beefier than my sens but maybe not as bass powerful as the beats. I listened to the beats at the gadget show exhibition last year. The lack of clarity and overpowering wooly bass just sounded like shit to me.

And i agree with what Dave said.

Am not recommending any headphones, I just said they seem pretty amazing, compared to my iPhone headphones.

The only headphones I have are which came with my iPhone and any other brand headphones are better then the iPhone headphones. And I like to listen to music from just speakers not headphones.

The Allen & Heath Xone XD2-53's have the biggest drivers (53mm hence the name), so would probably give you the Bass response your looking for.

Headphones are a personal choice though, best to try a few sets yourself, as its only you who can decide if you like them.

I've owned quite a few pair of headphones in the past, Senn's all the way mate

- Sennheiser HD598
- Sennheiser HD650 (great bass response, will need a headphone amp to get the best out of it thought)
- Sennheiser HD 25II (great cans)

These links should help you make that decision

http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/shoo...added-12-02-12

http://www.head-fi.org/t/478568/mult...added-12-16-12

As suggested, head-fi is a great resource for information relating to headphones

I've got a few headphones that I might be tempted to sell

Beats Studio
Sennheiser HD595
Sony MDR-NC60 (This is noise cancelling btw)
Sennheiser PX100

I've got quite a few top of the range in-ear headphones too
Monster Turbine Pro Gold
Sennheiser IE8 etc

Let me know if anything interests you, could do you a deal, cheers

can't recommend Bose in general. the exception is the quietcomfort.

Others seem to need replacing ever 6 months.

My favorites at the moment are etymotic er4. They are in-ear, but the sound reproduction is nothing short of amazing.

Don't get beats... Overpriced fashion accessory with serious sonic flaws... Your ears deserve better. Sennheiser, Grado, beyerdynamic are brands I'd look at. I use grados myself, not hugely bass heavy, but a very open, detailed and natural sound which is what I aim for. The big beyerdynamics do bass well.

This way as will be using living room as office if they do get their hands on them not end of the world. Once back in my office "man cave" I might revist for a better ones for next xmas
