A handful of newbie questions about wheels/tires

Howdy, I'm looking at getting a set of Axis Rev wheels 18x8.5 all around and putting Pilot Super Sport tires 225/40/18 on all of them.

My questions are:

1- Is it strange to have a non-staggered set of wheels and tires?

2- Is it bad that I'm going from a 255/35/18 to a 225/40/18 in the rear? Even though the rear wheels are staying the same size 18x8.5.

3- I have 2 fingers of wheel gap in the front but only 1 finger of gap in the rear with the top down. Should I somehow compensate for that by lowering the front of the car's suspension or inflating the tires differently or is this imbalance normal?

4- Is there any downside to using spacers to push the wheels out a bit and give it a wider wheel base? I'm pretty clueless here.

1. A lot of people run square set ups
2. 225 is a little arrow though I'd go 245
3. Normal.
4. If there is any downside it is negligible

1. Straight fitment is normal. Most wheels come with a square set-up.

2. I would recommend having the same tires on all fours. I wouldn't switch up the tires if they are all the same.

3. 2 finger gap in the front and 1 in the rear is normal. Most suspensions that play safe do that. They don't want the front hitting the curb or ground. The rear does not have to worry about slamming its face into anything, so that is why most set-ups have fronts a bit higher. I would not change anything. If anything, you can get new springs or coilovers to lower the overall height, and then you can change and level where your car could sit. I would not mess with anything individually because the front is a bit higher.

4. Most people don't experience any issues with wheel spacers. In most cases, they want to run a more aggressive wheel offset, so they use spacers. Some people use it to run a BBK (Big brake kit). One of the many normal tools people use on their vehicles.

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking at some 18x8.5 wheels and a set of Michelin super sport tires in 225/40 in front and 255/35 rear. Do you think putting different sized tires on the same wheels is a bad idea? I figured you wanted slightly smaller tires in the front for better steering response and fat ones in rear for grip.

I currently have stock 189 style wheels 18x8 front and 18x8.5 in rear with 225/45 front and 255/35 in rear and it seems okay to me.

Good questions. I'm new to this as well and am interested to know if running a square setup would reduce the inherent understeer.

1. I've been told by my good friend and self-professed BMW-phile that the staggered setup is part of the understeer. Any comments on that opinion??

2. On my 335, what size wheel should I run for a square setup (assuming I'd stay with an 18-inch)?

The wider rears do add to understeer because it gives the car a wider stance (ie. wider turning angle). Square setup would reduce the understeer.

for 18x8.5 wheels, 225/40 or 235/40 on all corners will work well if you want square.

It's good to be square as you can rotate. If you do spirited driving, your rear tires may wear faster. Rotating can help even things out. From what I've read, running square will reduce understeer.

I wonder though, if reducing rear tire width reduces cornering ability overall (less total tire patch). I've thought about going square but only if I can minimize the width reduction in the rear (say only go from 255 to 245).
