$400 for doc fees? NY

Hey guys, so im about to purchase a car, got the price I want but now the dealer is charging me for some nonsense charges

"required to pay ($398 Documentation Fee and $75 dealer prep and detail fee), and corresponding state taxes and registration fees.

What do you guys think? Are these reasonable fees for me to be paying?

Those admin fees suck - but I don't know of any dealer who doesn't charge them.. some folks are lucky and get them "waived" (calculated into price of veh anyhow) or reduced. Me? $499 is what I paid for those crap fees... you should at least try to negotiate those fees though

Say you are not paying doc fees and they will most likely reduce them from your price. They cannot be taken away, but they can reduce 399 from your price.

Doc fee is set by dealer, it can be $1000....if you are getting a good deal on a car then its not ridiculous

Like others have said you can get them "waived" or reduced. I got mine reduced from around $600 to I believe $150-200, but they just deducted it from the sale price. I had to pay the "detail/prep" fee but I demanded and received a refund for it because my car was delivered with swirl marks that weren't there when I test drove.

I got charged a $75 Gas Fee - which to me is ridiculous. I gotta a great deal so I didnt complain too much.

Its like buying a toy that says batteries not included, extra $$$$.

A CCA club friend sold me my car, got me a great deal on the money factor and waived the fees since I didn't bust him on the price for the car. Any salesperson can waive the fee all together as they actually get a piece of that markup in their pocket. If your dealer really wants your business, they can cut this down.

I work at a dealership and they charge a 299 doc fee. If they want the sale bad enough they will discount the selling price to compensate.
Else just go to a different dealer..

I don't know what doc fees are, when you think about it, they type something into a computer and a printer spits out papers. I told them I am not paying MACO and training fees, and they removed them. Car sales is not a regulated industry, so I suppose the finance mgr. can impose a I gotta take a leak right now fee and add $199 to the price if he wants, but a customer is free to walk out the door.

I worked at a dealership, and to answer your question, doc fees are fees that go straight in the pockets of the owners. Salesmen don't get a percentage off of them nor do doc fees cover fees for "storing your documents and files" at the dealership. It is 100% profit just because they can.
