Grinding-ish sound on start

Hey guys, every once in a while when I start my car (start/stop button) it sounds like a grinding type noise as it starts. Doesn't do it very often, and it seems like it only happens when the car has been sitting for a day or two. Any ideas?? 09 e92 328i.

ooo if it sounds like that could be the flywheel isn't aligned with the starter.

Yes! It doesn't do it immediately, but when I press the start button it sounds normal and right at the end it makes this weird metal sound. Only does it like 10% of the time, but it's annoying. Almost reminds me of what it sounds like if you turn the key in the ignition while the car is already running...not quite as loud and screeching though.

You're describing a starter that's on its way out. My 06 330i developed the starter grind around the 45k mark. The starter would still turn/grind for about two seconds AFTER the engine started running. Same exact grinding noise you describe as if you'd twist the key to start an engine that's already on. Warranty covered the faulty starter for a remanufactured one. Grinding never came back. Heard my 11 335i do the same thing only once in the last 10 starts. So far, it hasn't reoccurred.

hmmm it used to happen to me then when my car needed the 50k inspection they found the low pressure fuel pump and 3 cylinder coils needed to be replaced. After they replaced those the metal clapping sound went away. I dont think the clapping sound was because of the cylinders of fuel pump tho. However it did it just make that sound this morning. I have a weird feeling it has something to do with the exhaust tho it almost sounds as if the exhaust pipes are rattling or banging against something. Just a quick question are both of your exhaust tips at an even height and not crooked or uneven?

Sounds like it could be the starter solenoid not disengaging properly....Just rebuilt a starter and solenoid to learn about them. I probably could have bought a new one for the time I have in the rebuild...ah well...

I'm only at 36k but I have to go in soon to get a bulb replaced. I'm gonna have them look at it while it's there. I also was wondering if it could be the exhaust rattling. Sometimes when at idle they do rattle a bit. I've had the rattle checked out and supposedly they corrected it, but it's still there. I'm sure they will tell me that they "can't duplicate the problem" when I take it in lol.
