Ticking noise from engine block
Recently changed oil and plugs in my 08 335i... Did not us the BMW plugs but instead used the OE Bosch plugs that were $3/each cheaper. I tourqued all plugs to 17nM and made sure the coils were in good condition before re-installing and now I have a ticking notice that seems to follow the RPM. (Slower rpm, slower ticking)
Can't hear it while sitting inside the car, but when I get out and car is still running I easily hear it. No engine lights on or anything, fuel consumption seems normal, haven't noticed a significant change in power or anything although it is colder out so I don't drive it very hard too often. Can anyone think of what noise could be? I've checked for loose rattling things (clips, etc) and cannot seem to stop rattle...so I'm thinking it is coming from the engine and if so is not really a good sign .... :/ Any opinions or similar sounds would be great

Are you sure it's a new sound? The 335 is direct injected and I'm sure those injectors make some noise. A lot of times people are just more tuned into things after working on their cars and notice things that have always been there. I'm always paranoid about my brakes after bleeding them, the pedal always feels worse, but in reality it's the same or better.

Had me worried about the torque for a second! My mistake...I torqued then to 23nM but 17 foot lbs!
I'm thinking the same thing, its a noise that was already there and I'm just more tuned into it now. Especially with engine idle smooth and steady at about 600rpm.

Mine has a light thicking noise like the one you mentioning but I believe its due to the direct injected engines. Seems like it goes away when change oil which reminds me I need to do it soon along with spark plugs at 100k miles yikes but its all good!!!

![]() Many guys talk about using a heavier oil to keep the pressure up. I did an oil change and put 5w30 in there, not sure if I noticed the noise then or not but it seems to have nothing to do with my spark plug change. Another guy was talking about the upper tensioner wearing down and this causing the internal oil leak with the ticking noise. The tensioner is a $50 part. Anyone have an idea of how hard that is to change???

Yeah Romeo I'm interested too and will learn more about it. The article I read said its common on the N52 engines but BMW redid something in the engine to prevent it but I guess it didn't work...I'm not sure. Mines the N54 engine but I definitely have this ticking problem...
I'm also wondering if this is harming my engine at all...idk if I need to fix it right away or what.

I'm just wondering if its hard on the engine at all...? It may be fine with normal driving but if you push it and demand more oil pressure with it hurt it...? Idk enough about these engines but those r the type of questions I'm wondering and trying to find answers to. Also if changing my oil to a little heavier oil solve it...?

I threw in that half liter even when car told me oil was full but I only put an estimated 6.5 liters in after the oil change. So I figured it may be slightly low and cause slightly less oil pressure.
