No battery swap! New key for 140!

Hi guys.

BMW just said that cars with comfort access need new keys as batteries can't be replaced!

They want 140!

Is this right?

This is bmw London Kentish town parts dept.

Wrong way round. Keys that go into the dashboard slot do not have replaceable batteries because the battery is recharged whilst in the slot.

Obviously this does not happen with comfort access and so the battery certainly IS replaceable as it's a conventional battery (CR2032 I think) that eventually discharges. It is described quite clearly in the manual.....

Yep its a cr2023, I replaced it last week. Just pull the key out of the fob and pry off the small battery cover

Garage List
Typical case of owners knowing far more than those who sell the cars and parts for them!

Any one shocked?

Someone asked the other day whether a BMW salesman could be trusted,no one who works for BMW in any capacity can be trusted, clearly

Total rubbish from that parts department, disgraceful behaviour. Either he was trying to bluff you or he didn't know and couldn't be bothered finding out, either way is pathethic.

Buy a strip of the batteries from Ebay, I bought I think 12 Panasonic ones from Ebay for the same as one would have cost me in Boots. Replaced all keyfobs for both cars and they have been used in other kids toys etc too.

I'm still trying to figure out how on the e90 the keys are charged I presume its some form of inductive coil to charge it since there is no metal to metal contact like on e46

Yep, on non CA cars its inductive charge, like electric toothbrushes...... no contacts required.

CA cars have a battery as said, replaced mine twice, easy.

It was inductive on the e46 too, FWIW.

Absolutely disgraceful from BMW. Why is it they produce some of the world's most beautiful cars yet they can't tell the truth! Feel like calling a randome BMW dealer now and giving them an earful and I'm not even the one with the problem!!

But you'd only have one contact as there's only one bit of metal on the key, so you couldn't have a positive and negative, hence inductive.
