How long can I drive after a warning indicator?

Hi,

I just got a brake light up on my dashboard. Someone told me that I can drive it up to a month. Is this true?

Refer to the owner's manual. There are different types of alert indicators in your dashboard.
I am sure none of them are time related. You certainly have to take some action.

This is a bit like asking how long you have to wait to go to the hospital if you get stabbed. I suppose some people will tell you it depends if you hit any major organs or not, but the "right" answer is "right now."

You can drive it as long as you want. Something might break, or get damaged, or you my have an accident, but you can drive it as far as the crash site.

Seriously, why don't you read the owners manual, figure out what indicator is lit and what the manufacturer says to do about it. Writing a thread on an internet forum with as little description as possible what the indicator is is pretty useless for you.

If its the red "Brake" light, and your parking brake lever isn't engaged at all, then it means your brakes are at the minimum thickness. I'm not advocating driving for a long time but you could get away with it for a little while as you probably have some pad thickness left. It's up to you though.

It actually depends on what kind of month they are talking about. If they mean a short February month then ya you're probably fine for 28 days. But if he was talking about February in a leap year and there are 29 days then it's risky.

Now if he meant like a January month with 31 days, then noway, that's just crazy talk. So I guess we need more details on what kind of month your friend meant.

Take a look at your pads and check the thickness. I just had my brake light come on for the rears and my pads are fine.

Good point!

And what did he mean by drive? If he meant drive only in the driveway that's OK, but not in January - so wait 'til next month.

But driving on the road is another matter entirely...
