In a world of many cars, the 3 series is pretty special

I know we talk about how common our cars are in some cities and how they leak oil all the time but ponder this for a second:

Our cars are special because they are not a shared platform.
So many other vehicles on the road the chassis is shared with another vehicle somewhere in that companies line up.
This has numbed down many models over the last so many years in so many ways.

More things that make it special:
Longitudinally mounted engine (RWD has just been drying up more and more over the years)
RWD first, AWD second (as opposed to transversely mounted engine thats FWD first, AWD second)
Manual transmission option (almost dead at least in US)
Inline 6 cylinder engines with some forged internals (I mean who makes an Inline 6 engine anymore?)
Twin turbos ( one could argue how special this really is but one thing it isnt is cheap)
Our E9X's are the last of the hydraulic steering bmw was known for, it's gone now.

It just seems like we pay more nowadays for less when speaking generally about vehicles.
I think we've reach the end of the "salad days" of vehicles but I argue that through the E9x platform BMW threw in the towel so to speak much later then most manufacturers.

Enjoy your cars guys, I have a feeling moving forward we won't be able to get all the same hardware/design and if you do, you're going to be paying out the nose for it.

Technically, it's a crossover using the 1 and 3 series platform. That said, I totally agree with you....there are so many things I love about my 335i. It will be a sad day when upgrade time comes along.

I buy a car for myself every 10 years or so and I am loving life every time I get into this one. My wife gets a new vehicle very two years (lease) and has since 1996 and I have been in the business since 1991.

These cars ARE special, no doubt in my mind and the culture around them is fantastic.

Couldn't agree more OP. I love my E90 and plan to keep it for life.
By far my least favorite change BMW made is their electronic steering. Everytime I drive one it drives me nuts. I lose almost all the feeling of the car, especially at high speeds. I use to get complaints about how stiff the steering is in our cars but I absolutely love it because I always have control of the car. Hopefully BMW gets back to the hydraulic steering some day.

Thats why it is so popular, and I absolutely love mine even more than I did 6 years ago. I hope to keep my E93 forever as a daily and add some type of M in the future.

I'm inspired by the OP's post.. I was seriously considering trading it in - have a disease, been through about 13 BMW's in as many years!!

Anyway, I think I will finally keep this baby and maybe add to it when I have the time, finances, etc.. Maybe one day it'll be a classic or at least a "nice old Bimmer" like so many nice E30's out there..

I like this post. I am still shocked that they got rid of the hydraulic power steering. I've driven the F30 as a loaner and it's not a car I would buy. E90 were great cars

Your last comment is one of the reasons I'm glad I bought the car when I did. I know they will improve on electric steering in the years to come but for now electric steering plain sucks !!!!

They're special alright! I bought mine brand new in February of 2007. Tiag with black. Had it for 6 years and 70000 miles before I traded it for the same color combo 2013 X3. Although I liked it, my 12 year old daughter was not happy! It grew on her though and my son liked it because he had a better view in the back seat. He never kissed the hood rounded on it like he did the car though.. Lol.
Finances changed and I had to dump it.. Cut and run so to speak. Ended up with a 2013 GTI brand new and a much lower payment.. Leased. Nice car no doubt but... Daughter had tears in her eyes like " you traded the bmw for this shitbox!?"
Also had a 2005 grand Cherokee that my girlfriend drives.. Was wondering what to do when lease is up and no need to keep jeep and its hemified 10 mpg, so...
Ok, girlfriend gets vw, jeep traded for an 08 335i Tiag and black, premium and sport packages... Same car, one year newer.. All is right with the world

Except I'm paying for a car I had payed off in two years back then!!

These are magnificent cars and I really do think they will age well, especially the 2011 LCI's which will stay a fresher a bit longer (thanks to the updated styling/LED tails, CIC nav, combox/bluetooth streaming, N55 reliability, etc.)

I'm currently slowly putting together the equipment for a CIC -> NBT retrofit so I'll have the updated tech of the F30 with the elegance and refinement of the E90, not to mention the last of the hydraulic steering. '

These are truly blissful cars to own.

Re OP's comment about Inline 6s: just read a Road & Track article. Looks like Inline 6s are going to be coming back on the higher end models (e.g. Mercedes). This due to bean counters and ever tightening fuel economy restrictions.
