335i window trim painted black

Had some free time at work yesterday and decided to black out the window trim on my car. Took about 2 hours total.

Prep: First masked the entire car, then sanded down the trim with 80 grit sandpaper, then sanded with 220, wiped down with lacquer thinner, sprayed self etching primer, sprayed flat black base coat, sprayed clear coat with flattening agent.

Very happy with the results. I don't expect it to chip at all with all the prep I did and also with the clear coat.

nice work! looks like a really clean job. although if i were to paint it with all that labor, i would've painted it gloss black instead.

I did the same on my 328.. it still chipped despite my prep

i sanded down the chrome, put on two coats of primer, two coats of paint, and a clear coat

i was surprised to see it chip.. huge hassle to re-do

looks great, though.. good luck

i have to redo my kidney grills. they chipped even though i did 4 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear (all were "chip resistant" paint)

may just buy piano black kidneys from khoa

definitely worth it. I bought the OEM gloss black kidneys and they look great. noticeable difference when you look up close

Thanks! I think the satin finish contrasts well with the windows.

Mine was the brushed aluminum too, but it was starting to tarnish up.

well you know that its easier if you pull of the trim...its really simple...simpler than what people think.

i just did this too except i pulled off all the trim and painted it.

the only thing sort of time consuming is when you have to pull the door panels off to get to the small piece under the side view mirrors.

Have you thought about painting the lower mesh grille black instead of leaving it that stock gray/silver? I'm wanting to do that to mine once I replace the kidney grilles to gloss black. Good job on the window trim, but I don't have that kind of time. I will have to a paint shop to do mine.

Yes, it is probably better to remove the trim but I didn't want to have to remove the door panels, with my luck I would probably break something.

Yes, that is what I need to do next to match the other trim
