Buying a car with a reported accident..
Hey guys, been in the market for a E92 28xi (as some of you may know from my previous post). I've fell in love with the blue colors. The one I was looking at before was bought a few days ago (ended in a price war between another buyer, was not willing to pay what was being asked) and have found another Deep sea blue with a interior that I like more. The Carfax has a "Accident reported Involving rear impact". What are your thoughts on buying a a car with a reported accident? Is there anyway finding out more about the accident? Should I forget about this way and look for another? It also lacks any detail into the service records in the Carfax. Is that a red flag?

Well, if you really want this car then you can probably take it to a shop and have them check it out and see if the repairs were done properly and if there is any frame damage. I would stay away from this car though, it's a 328 for 31k. You can easily buy a CPO 335i for that price. That's just my opinion.

I was under the impression a car with an accident on its VIN couldn't be CPO'd... guess I was wrong.

I would always get a PPI to be sure, but everybody usually buys the CPO for the warranty anyway.. I remember a story on here a while back, a CPO car was sold with the rear seat belts literally cut out lol..

Yeah, but it's still nice to have the warranty. Just make sure you check every little thing and make sure it's all good and if it's not all good, get them to fix it before you sign the papers. Another approach is you can just buy a car still under factory warranty and extend it for about 2-3k.

if i were you i would leave the color preference, while choosing a used car...
Sometime it's very hard to find the right model with the right options, color at the right price. when i was looking for mine, i skipped all the Titanium silver cars. I end up buying one. |

I would pass on a car with an accident, unless you could find solid documentation regarding the nature of the accident, the extent of the damage, and how it was repaired.
E90/92 aren't exactly rare. Just be patient and persistent. Something good will come your way. |

+1 on a PPI and have them inspect the frame closely in addition to the entire rear of the car. You can still use the accident report, if it passes inspection, as leverage in negotiating. Walk away if they refuse your request for an independent PPI. GL
