I've got a friend who's getting paid to remove the two bolts holding the (secondary?) cats and mufflers off of a 2012 550i.
I'm believe he is going to place spacers over the bolts so that there is an exhaust leak created.
Aside from the obvious pollution of the environment, won't the engine light come on when the readings from the oxygen sensors are off?
or are the sensors not on the exhaust but rather on the down pipes?

It's a simple question; is the car going to be harmed (and therefore my friend shouldn't make a quick buck off of this stranger)?

Sensors are on the DPs itself... Though, I do not know if causing an exhaust leak will throw codes.

I've never heard of anyone doing that before. If you have a good ear you can usually hear an exhaust leak.

This sounds like a really crap idea. I see the reasoning - it's a cheap way to make the car louder without buying a full performance exhaust - BUT - exhaust gases are very corrosive, so anything that they're hitting will be damaged over time, plus, there's health/safety reasons why the tailpipe is run to behind the passenger compartment. Finally, there's a difference to an educated ear between an exhaust leak and an exhaust system that's intended to be loud. Personally I'd pass on the job and advise the owner of the car to just spend a little more money and have some louder mufflers welded in.

+1 you'll hear a V8 rumble + the sound of an exhaust leak, it'll be a pffffffffffff paper-blowing-in-a-fan noise caused by the exhaust gases hitting against the "inlet" of the remaining exhaust pipes where he has it spaced off.

Perfectly stated! This is a dumb idea for a $60,000+ car.

agreed. If you have the money to drop on a car like that, why would you do something so backyard-chopshop...ish.

The car should be fine. Similar to the old school mod of drilling a few holes in a motorcycle exhaust. I did it to my CB650 when I was a kid and boy was my dad pissed.
