Half rfts

Hi,
So I want to change my rears to normal tyres as they are coming down to being changed, thing is the fronts still have a good 7mm on them and don't want to spend for the sake of unwanted expense,
Would it be ok to change the rears to normal tyres? Or would the car handle badly?

I don't think that is advised. All tyres should be the same or you will end up with an unstable set up.

People pay good money for part used runflat tyres especially 19 inch.

If you want to replace the runflat with normal tyres, I would advise selling them on eBay/subtree to offset the cost of 4 new tyres.

It's actually okay to have rfts on 1 axle and std tyres on the other axle.. many people do that and find that it's okay. I know a few forum members who do that too LOL.

What is not advised is to mix the type of trye on the same axle... biiiiig no no!

As people have already suggested, sell off the part worn RFTs and put that towards std tyres.. there is quite a market for RFTs out there so if you can, go down that route, otherwise it seems diff tyres provided they're the same per axle is fine.

Yes I will be keeping the same on each axle,I'd be interested to hear from anyone here who has this setup on their car?
What's it ride like?
Guess the first thing to do is check with insurance company first

I had RFT rears and non RFT fronts for a few months.

Falken 452 STD fronts
Yokohama RFT rears

The car drove perfectly fine. No issues at all.

Same situation as you, I have non-rft rears and rft fronts atm, no issues.

I have runflat rears and standard fronts and have had no issues. Have a nail in one of my rears though and unsure where will repair a runflat tyre so will change to standards if I need a new tyre.

If the front still have 7mm, sell them either here or ebay. You'll easily make enough to cover the cost of one, probably one and a half new non-RFT tyres to replace them.

I've been running run flats on the back and non run flats on the front for 18months, just about ready to go 100% non run flat but can't say it's been a problem mixing them

I ran my 123d with non-rft's on the rear and rft's on the front with no probs.

Will do the same with the 335d as the rears are going before the fronts.

It can be physically done, it's whether your insurance company will still cover you in the event of an accident...

I was told that it wouldn't pass an mot with a mix match on? And that maybe your insurance maybe invalid? So I would check first if I was you.

I wouldn't risk it OP.

In terms of car handling, insurance, MOT etc...

Sell the fronts and get vreds all round.

Just because on day to day driving it hasn't made any difference, doesn't mean that it's ok. You're changing the handling characteristics from one part of the car to another.

You could put one run flat, one winter, one space saver and one normal tyre on and (ok so the space saver will cause probs) generally, everything would be fine for the most part. Then someone swerves towards you on a bend on a dual carriageway. You have to take evasive action. You crash.

Been trying to say this to folk on the e46 forum. Just because something (in their case 30 cool overs) works when you potter round to your grandmas house, doesn't mean it will save your life in an extreme situation.

No idea about mot pass or fail, but I just wouldn't risk it. I replaced all 4 tyres for the same cost as 2x rear fun flats and sold the fronts on here. Job done!

+1 to frobius. Really shoudf sticky his view. May i add if you people can't afford tyres then don't drive a bmw. If you are going to save money on cost of tyres which IS the only thing that connects you to the ground.

My mot station told me it would be a fail! And a very good freind of mine who has his own tyre company told me the exact same thing. Some mot stations might overlook this but I would rather my car mot was done properly and not overlooked. Safety is paramount especially when my daughter is in the car with me.
