Looking at new wheels

So I think my stock RFT's will need replacing soon. the rear tires are starting to get near the minimum tread wear (about 15k miles).

I was looking on tire rack's site and saw a wide selection. But I am also seeing a huge disparity in some of the pricing. I saw some summer perf Bridgestone potenza's going for about $1,200 (for a set of 4) and some continental's and dunlop's going for almost half that price. My questions:

1) Is the extra $600 for the pricier Potenza's, and similarly priced tires, worth the money? Am I losing out on anything by only spending $600?

2) I assume that transitioning from RFT's to non-RFT's is a smart move, especially if I am looking to go to the track. Anyone disagree with that?

Any feedback would be awesome.

Which model of Bridgestone Potenza were you referring to? Compared to which Continental? I can help explain the differences.

I don't think I've heard of anyone that made the move from RFT to non-RFT that didn't LOVE their car after. Excellent choice

It turns out I was looking at RFT tires, which I am trying to avoid. Once i filtered out the RFT's the average price dropped to around $650 for a set of 4....much more in line with my expectations.

Still though I do see some summer performance tires going for about $1,100 (Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 050 Max Performance Summer). What is the difference between this tire setup and something like Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position Max Performance Summer going for about $650?

I want a tire that will offer good performance on the track but can still deal with daily driving duties.

Edit: Also is it recommended to buy a 5th tire as a spare, or do people still buy donuts designated for emergency duty?

I'm making the transition to non run flats soon as well and wanting to hear how others go about it. Instead of the spare and trying to keep it strap down in the trunk, I was thinking about getting a patch kit and a small air compressor so if I ever did get a flat, I could at least patch it up and get a few miles on it. Now in the case of going on a longer trip or or something like that, Id probably bring the spare just in case.

Here is the link to spare tires if your interested http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...T-E90-KIT.html

Right now you can get some great deals on summer tires, I've never had any issues with Pirelli's and tire rack has them for the cheap right now.

The Bridgestone S04 Pole Position is actually an outstanding tire; better than the Potenza RE050.

You can view some differences in our testing data :

I just put s04's on my 335d. Haven't done a full write up yet, but after 1000 miles: Big improvement over choppy crashy stock rft's

The Tire Rack does not do seasonal discounts or sales; more of an everyday low pricing type of structure.
