Alpina is auto only. That only makes it less cool than the regular Z8.

Very true, but the wheels and the rarity of it make up for it. One of only 550 ever made.

555 to be exact. This is one of the few cars that are simply beautiful. This will go down in history with the sl gulling, 550 spyder, and 275gtb

Z8 so much better than the Alpina version. MT plus the full M5 engine vs. the normal 540i's engine and an Auto.

One of the few Alpinas I don't like.

I've seen a few of these over the years and I'm not sure why this car was ever made at all. They took the amazing Z8 (one of my all time favorite cars) and sat at a table and said "Ok boys, let's take the performance down a notch, soften up that suspension, throw in a set of wheels and some badges, and voila - new model!" It's one of BMWs greatest blunders, IMHO. Especially aggregeous considering it's derived from one of their greatest design triumphs.

While I love the Z8 (Alpina or not), the car I lust for and wish that BMW had the cajones to put into production is the Z07.

(And yes, I know the Z8 was supposed to be the production version of the Z07, but somehow the Z8 just doesn't have the certain je ne sais quoi of the Z07)

The only difference I really see is the hump behind the drivers head. As far as concept-to-production watering down, I think this is probably one of the most true-to-concept incarnations in automotive history. Not sure where your gripe lies...

Love Z8. Alpina versions usually do not look as good as this one. Seen few for sale and the color combos were too much. US ambassador to one European country bought TWO (tax free and at mega discount) before heading back to US. Those cars are keepers.
