2010/2011 BMW 328i or 2010/2011 Audi A4 (CPO of course)

Last night my wife and I went to dinner and decided since we were by the BMW dealer and I'm probably buying a car in the next few months, we decided to check out the 2010/2011 328i while we were down there. It's on my short list...also on my list is the 2010/2011 Audi A4.

So we pulled the baby seat out of my wife's car, threw it in the 328i and went for a drive. I was very impressed with how much more room the BMW had over our current pair of mazda3's. With the babyseat in and behind the passenger seat, my wife had a TON more room in the front. Additionally there was significantly more backseat room behind me (the 6ft 6in driver). Overall the 328i is a pretty legit package. The interior differences between the 2010 and my buddies 2007 were pretty noticeable in terms of quality of materials. The design didn't change much but something about the materials just seemed better? Maybe it was my imagination but it seemed better...

Next to drive within the next few weeks is an A4. It's been awhile since I've driven one and I didn't have a baby at that point. Last time I drove one I remember thinking, wow this is a great daily driver with all the torque from the 2.0t. It felt better around town than the 328i from that perspective...

They're both similarly sized and I've read two competing reviews with regard to back seat room. One claiming the Audi had the most room, the other claiming BMW.

Obviously this is a BMW website but I've done a ton of reading on here and know that many can be unbiased and honest.

Audi Pros
Better looking interior
Better quality interior
Better MPG (rated anyway)
Great 6speed auto or 6MT
A couple grand cheaper when similarly equipped

Cons
BMW looks better on the outside, though both look fantastic
Less tied down than the BMW
Very good steering feel but not on par with the E90
Might be less reliable???
Resale will be worse??? Maybe??

BMW Pro's
Better chassis
Fantastically smooth inline 6
Seemed a tiny bit quieter inside (need to drive them both back to back)
Likely better resale???
Maybe better reliability???

BMW Con's
Interior while well put together is rather bland
Cost more
Not near the torque of the Audi
Audi has the better auto IMO

I would prefer a manual but am open to an automatic.

Whatever I get will be CPO. I welcome any and all thoughts on these two vehicles AND the CPO programs from the respective manufacturers.

I welcome any and all thoughts on this...

A lot of people call the e90 interior bland, while it depends on how its configured, color wise trim wise, I like the minimalist design. Audi's interiors are a little over rated.

You also don't want all wheel drive unless you need it. Pain in the ass long term service wise.

I would look at leasing a 2013+ 328i you get a much better turbo 4 motor like the Audi, then just buy it out at the end of your lease if you like it. It will be like buying a car from yourself.

While it's true the resale will be lower with BMW, IMO the BMW will be more reliable.

I'm not sure what your budget is but a used 335i would be much more fun than either of the other options, they're rapidly dropping in price. If you can deal with an AT (which I don't really recommend from a fun standpoint) - then you can get them at an even lower price.

Check out Texas Auto Direct, they usually have at least 10+ on the lot and they prices are awesome. Shipping from Texas to the North East was only $800 and I saved nearly 8k off of buying a similarly equipped car locally (and we have tons of salt here!)

I was looking at the A5 and the 328 coupe. Had to be manual, no autos. The audi felt rubbery and the BMW a little notchy (fixed with SSK and CDV delete). Besides that the A5's were more expensive and I liked the looks better on the exterior of the BMW. The Audi interior was nicer I thought, especially when loaded. However the BMW isn't ugly or something I couldn't live with.

Also the Audi got better gas mileage, nearly 30 compared to mid/low 20's with the 3 series xdrive.
