Can anyone recommend some tyres they consider to be hard wearing?

Last Feb' I changed from RFTs to non-RFTs all round - I went for Continental Sport Contact 5s on all fours but just noticed both rears are low and will probably need changing soon. Considering they're only 11 months old I think this is a bit crap and not impressed with their wear. The fronts seem OK though.

Anyway will need to look around to replace both rears - thinking Michelin will be the best and most expensive - but what about others - Pirelli, Goodyear, etc...???

Any opinions/thoughts???

Not quite sure how age comes in to it - 11 months for me nowadays is about 5000 miles but a few years ago it would have been 30,000+

Anyway, Dunlop SportMaxx seem to wear well on my 5.

yeah... 11 months isnt really a good measure of tyre wear. how many miles have they covered?

if you do 20,000 miles a year, then you've probably done just fine. I expect tyres to last me two years based on doing around 10k a year,

Contis are known for their excellent grip, partly because they are a softer compound which - you've guessed it - wears out more quickly. Horses for courses.

I think in the last 11 months I've had these I've covered 10k miles - need to double check but I think that's about right.

Do you drive 'normal' or with a heavy foot. Even the 320d produces a fair chunk of torque. Enough to rip through tyres.

I checked my tread depth on my 18s bridgestones RFTs when I changed to my winter set up. Quite impressed, after 4 years and 17k I have 6mm+ on the fronts and 5mm+ on the rears. My winter tyres are 18s dunlop RFTs and they are so much quieter than the bridgestones. The bridgestones are mounted on smoked silver replica CSLs and I am now thinking of selling them and going down the non RFT dunlop route.

The Bridgestone RE050A wears well. I know some dont rate them for grip, but I've never found that an issue. Got 25k on the front tyres of my Civic Type R and wasn't being sympathetic to them....

Most I've had so far out of a set of tyres is 12k miles.

Bridgestone RFT's only lasted 10 due to the inner edge wear, Falkens lasted 12 and the Vreds I currently have on are looking like they will only last 12.

I put it down to the winding roads, 90% of my mileage is rural so I'm constantly cornering. The rears don't seem to wear any quicker than the fronts so it's not as if i'm smoking the rears.

I got khumo's on my work VW and do around 25-30k for the front and about 40k for rears just purchased some for the 330 so I am hoping to get about 15-20k for the rears and 30k on fronts! And I think they are a really good underestimated tyre, loads quieter and more grip than Pirelli, Toyo's and Goodyear's!

I've just changed my contis 5p rears. Only got 10k miles out of them. Fronts still have 5mm left. I've switched to good year asym 2 to see if I can get a bit more mileage.

A less performant tyre will obviously not last as long as a rock solid compound. It's a sliding scale. The fastest tyre is the softest as it's the stickiest.

I'm not sure how there is a discussion to be had here.

Similar situation to me then - was thinking of the good year asym 2s as well - heard good comments about these.

My front ones seem ok but me being a bit OCD I might change all four.

if it offers you peace of mind then yeah change all 4. If the fronts are good then bang em on ebay or sell them on here. Should be easy to shift.

I am still skeptical as to whether the good years will be any better though. Apparently rear tyres on the e93 wear quickly regardless because of the additional weight in the back...especially when the top is down.

Hard cornering, wrong tyre pressures, mis-alignment and rapid acceleration wear tyres out more than slightly extra weight of stowing the roof in the boot with the e93.

The Kumho KU39 on the rear of mine are going to need changing very soon - I'm somewhere around the 10k mark with them, probably a bit less.

ALL my driving is motorway and dual carriageway. I don't do hooning, because I don't have a chance.

If the Contis only last the same, I'm not going to spend 50% more on them when I need to change.

I'll be really annoyed if I only get 10k from my conti 5s. I had a set of Goodyears on my cl9 accord and got about 25k - and I hooned around in that!

Well, that's 2 people so far on this thread saying that's all they got

If it's any use, I only got the same 10k from the Falken 452 I had fitted beforehand.
