Plasti Dip!! Stock chrome grills to black!

So this is the first time I really ever spray-painted anything.

Thought Plasti Dip would be safe since if you really screw up you can always peel it off.

Actually ended up turning out really great. Super happy with it. Easiest mod i've done yet, only cost me $6 for a can at Home Depot. Took no time at all and was a 0.5 out of 10 on the difficulty meter.

Let me know what you think! I have the shadowline trim so the grills now match the trim.

Looks great... I hope to do this soon as well. Can't beat $6.

Good work. I love Plasti-dip, because if you don't like the results, you can just peel it off. I've been considering doing this on my Space Grey E92, but haven't gotten around to it.

Nice. I plan on doing this once the weather gets a little nicer... I already have the dip... just not sure if I want to get a glosser for it, or leave it a matte black - I also have shadow line trim, but I haev a jet black car, not sure what would look better.

Did you take the grilles apart and just do the chrome? or did you respray the actually slats too? or did you tape them off?

looks good.

I did this about a year ago, first shot I wasn't happy since I saw a freakin finger print on it, I re-did it and it turned out great, theres a hell lot of snow in montreal and lots of salt and it's holding up very well without any chips!! It doesn't come off when you put the power hose on it so that makes it even better! It started fading lately though.. kinda turning greyish!

I went with the metallic black spray and gloss and it came out fantastic!

Thanks!

Actually I just took them both out whole and sprayed them without taking them apart or taping them off. The rest of it is black and over-spray doesn't really matter on just the grills as they're plastic inserts.

You honestly don't get much over spray with Plasti Dip. It's not like spray paint. It doesn't kick up into the air either when you're spraying since it's a much thicker substance.

I'm actually debating putting coat of glossy Plasti Dip over them to match the rest of the car better. It'd probably look nicer.

I actually have the same thing done to my 335i. I've had it on for like 2.5 weeks now and it's holding up great!

why not just get some 200/400 grit and gloss black plastic spray paint? i did that to mine and it matches my gloss shadowline perfect. hit it with a few coats of clear too. chip resistant paint too. and they are easy to separate from the slats so its not a huge deal. one can of black, one can of gloss = $9

I totally can appreciate why you'd go this route. I think the main advantage to the plasti-dip application is that it's completely reversible if you ever go back to stock or just don't like the look any longer.

awesome! this has been on my to- do list but wanted to see it done first and it looks great and saves a good amount. also I didn't even think about doing this to the window trim but now I will as I'm sure it'll save $100.

Looks good. Personally my plastidip experience with the grills was that it faded in color after a while. It's a good temporary look thats for sure.

Simply because I like the fact that I can change it back if I was feeling like it and it only costs me 6 bucks.

Looks great and can't beat the price! I've been thinking about doing it too, but would prefer it to be a little more glossy to match the shadowline trim.

I thought I would share a tip. Before spraying, let the can sit in some hot tap water. The paint-plastic will atomize better and you'll get a much smoother finish.

Yup, you can put it on paint.

I've seen pictures and vids of people who Plasti Dipped their whole car.

Can't imagine it lasts very long on the entire car but then again touching it up is probably real easy.
