So my kid got sick at school, and on the way home vomited all over the leather seats in the back. I cleaned it up with in minutes, I used a million leather shampoo and conditioner armor all whipes but the leather still smells when your up close. What can I use that's leather safe to remove the smell? Anyone ever have to remove vomit or other smells from their leather caused by either a child or pet?

I've read that to remove smells caused by human or animal bodily fluids you need something that has an enzyme eater to eat the bacteria that is actually causing the smell. This is used in many pet urine/poop odder removers, but because leather is a organic material you can't use anything with an enzyme eater because it will eat your leather too. Has anyone else heard of this?

Tried that, after awhile the febreeze just rubs off on your cloths and the smell is still underneath.

Baking soda and lots of water then use the leather conditioner after. The leather conditioner is just making the leather more porous and letting it absorb the vomit moisture in. Also check really good in the seat crevices and seat belts. It sounds really gross but puke tends to sneak in everywhere. I'm thanking The Lord my 5 year old has only chucked in my wife's car.

Key point: Is the smell in the leather, or is it in the stitching and leechs through the stitch holes? Further, I believe I read that a lot of automotive leather is ventilated (full of holes) even if it doesn't obviously appear this way. That means the vomit went THROUGH, and this isn't specifically a leather problem, but your solution needs to be safe for leather.

Either way, I'm sorry that your car smells like vomit.

But in all seriousness, good luck. The smell of vomit is a bitch to get out of anything. I'd say keep treating it with leather conditioner, especially on warm days when you can leave it out in the sun (not sure where you're located...if you're in New England like me, than disregard my suggestion) and allow the pores in the leather to open up and soak in the conditioner. Keep febreezing the carpets (might help to overpower the vomit) and perhaps look into getting a professional detail. While it may be expensive, might be worth it for piece of mind. I'm sure they've dealt with vomit before and know the best ways to eliminate the odor.

guys baking soda has been proven to kill the enzyme that causes the smell. Its tried and proven. Mix some with a gently detergent and wipe away. For attacking the vomit in the creases, stitching etc spray the solution in those areas and let penetrate. Then wet vac to remove as much moisture. Use a leather conditioner on the moist leather and let it dry naturally AWAY from the sun.

Baking soda, and patience. It'll take 1/2 weeks for the smell to completely dissipate, but it will go away.

Been there, done that. The smell is in the foam, underneath the leather. The acid in vomit seeps through stitching very fast. You might have wiped the leather but underneath will still smell.

You said rear seats, in our cars it has foam exposed on the bottom (leather is only wraps top and sides). You can try to dose that with odor killers once you remove them (very easy just pop them straight up, no screws or anything)

Same here, and the kids also marked up the leather with ball point pen.

Use your regular hair shampoo with water and a smooth cloth like a J-cloth. It removes odor, pen marks and has the smell from the shampoo. After the smell is gone use leather conditioner. Test first in an inconspicuous area to make sure your shampoo does not strip out the color.

Make a few cheese cloth bags with activated carbon found at Walmart in the pet fish isle and place them around the interior where the kids can't find them.

my friend got drunk and threw up all over my mom's car. I traded the car just for that reason. lol.

febreeze extra strength and leave the windows open if you garage your car over night for the next week. Repeate febreeze exra strength as necessary. Had to do it on my porsche as some one couldn't take the G-Forces and threw up all ove the dash window and door all in leather. NOTE: Make sure you test febreeze on a small leather area to see if it actually has any chemical reaction to the leather and if it doesn't fade after 1 hr then you are good to go. I used 1 bottle on my car and can't smell anything anymore.
