Brake wear light..

I did a search trying to find an answer but was unable to find exactly what I was looking for.

A couple of weeks ago I got the Brake wear msg on the info display. I reset it by pushing on the #1 stalk, only to have it come back a bit later. I reset it again and it has stayed off since. However, when I start up the car the "Brake" msg shows up on the display in amber and then shifts to red before it goes out along with all the other lights lit up when the ignition is turned. I do not get the "car on lift symbol" with this message.

When I go into the service menu it shows 9000/20000 miles left on front/rears.

Does the fact that the msg turns red indicate that it's time to have the brakes checked, or does this sound like a sensor issue considering the system still indicates plenty of miles left on the brakes?

I'm on the BMW maintenance plan so it's not a big deal, I'm just wondering if I should bring the car in or get some more life out of the brakes before having them changed.

My second question is, does BMW normally change the rotors every time they put new pads on, since that is what they recommend? Or is that just when the customer flips the bill.

I'm at 68000 miles but unsure of the history of the brakes as I've only had it for 11000 miles.

I think you get this error when you reset without having new sensors/pads installed.... I'd recommend pulling the tires off and seeing how much pad life you have left. When it's actually time, you can replace them... if the warning light bothers you, you have to get new sensors.

If your brake light symbol comes on....dont just reset it. look and see if your brake pads are low. of course this means you have a weeks toa few months of use until you see decrease in braking performance.

if you have warranty, of course go in and get it changed. Most likely they will change the pads and rotors (plus new sensors). Use that warranty as much as possible.
