Brush Aluminium CIC controller Retrofit guide-Non M3 guide-

It's my first time writing a guide so be easy on me.

I'm Writing this guide for people who will be having problem finding part no. for the brush aluminum center console on E90-E92.

I wanted to do this upgrade for a long time but since BMW did not put Aluminium trim offically as a option on LCI Car's i was having a very hard time being unsure which trim to buy. There is Pre-lci car that had the new updated controller with the old navigation system before the update when they took the option off and replaced with several new trims so that was what made me do the retrofit.

RAF actually gave me a Part no. for the trim piece and he also sold me the controller so credits to him for helping me out and clearing all uncertainty with all these trim piece numbers.

What you need:

*Brush Aluminium cic centre console or whatever bmw calls it (51169145144 Cover centre console ALU/FEINSCHLIFF) ( e90-e91-e92 only)
NO. 51169145144

*CIC controller

*Torx Driver size T10,T15 or T20 both works but T20 fits better

Time: 30 mins

Total cost for me NEW console 180 pounds and second hand idrive controller around 90 pounds.

PIC-1

Link

If you look here there is no option showing in REALOEM when you look for the CIC Trim piece ,this is what gave me to so much uncertainty as number 19 * shows a different part no.

Put into neutral and pull the knob off - This makes it so much easier to work around with.

put your fingers inbetween the plastic and leather and pull and it will pop off

Disconnect the blue connector, the white one wouldn't come off so i just left it. when you're a the stage to take the console off just loop it thur.

I tried to follow the M3 cutter retrofit guide but i find it impossible to get it off.instead if you look at the photo below the connectors are those you can just pull up.

Disconnect the white plug under the smoking tray , this lets you to flip the console over

Disconnect the plug to the idrive controller

Remove the ash try and put it across to the new one. take off the screw to the old idrive and put it to the new one ( beware not to tight the screws too hard as i broke one of mine )

Carefully tuck everything back together and use some force to clip the console back on.( make sure everything works before you do it!!)

Nice one-great install guide and one that I'm thinking of tackling too.
I want to change all of my brushed aluminium for the alu-carbon.Ive got everything but the centre console section and controller.
I like the idea of the seven button controller-I take it that you need this coded so that all of the buttons work with the idrive?-I have ccc by the way...

Nope, No coding at all. if your idrive is upto date then it works, if not you need it updated to latest fireware. My car's last update was 2010 and the controller works fine.My Car production date 05/2008 with the CCC drive. i don't have the new one. hope this helps

Thanks. I'll regret not doing this sooner.

So far it i found it makes the cabin looks more updated to the current car. I find the idrive system is actually pretty quick, just that before when using the old idrive you had to annoying play around and it take time. press once on the buttom the idrive loads the screen right away with no lag!!

Looking at it, I assume the metal trim is stuck to a plastic moulding, does the whole thing just pull off?

Yes, the entire thing is a secured by a flexiclip. You need to use a bit of force. If you have your new one in front of you then you look at the new one and estimate where each clip is clipped on and thus use force at that area and pull slowly and gently.

bill, check if your idrive has brown of silver menu screen. I think it will defitnitley work if you have the silver screen(updated idrive) goodluck finding your parts! You are looking for carbon alu cube trim right? Must be easier than what mine was as brushed aluminium doesn't show scratched up on photo hence i gave up ebay

Thanks for this post - it's helped me to find the trim I need as its been a struggle with the help of BMW parts to find the right cover.

I will be ordering a new trim piece from BMW.

Btw the price for the trim is £163 + vat!!!

Have been looking on eBay but then you risk buying one with scratches in it so I've decided to go for a new one.

Nice how too. Consider ordering from Harry Fairburn BMW as they offer 15% discount to e90post members and they do free shipping.

I bought all my upgrade bits from them. Very helpful and speak to Stuart in parts.

Looks good mate. I didn't know the CIC controller works on the CCC system. Learn a new thing every day! So do all the 7 buttons work fine as per the functions labelled?

If anyone's looking to do this mod I do have two CIC controllers and two brushed aluminium trims up for grabs

Can anyone help with mine, I've got a 2006 Idrive with the old style 2 buttons.

Is this still a direct swap? I've seen on some places that it's not as easy...

Any help would be great, thanks!

Bit of a random one....but if the mechanism on my cover (number 7 in the diagram) has gone, as in it won't stay closed, will a repair mean removing the entire centre console?

from what i remeber.. there is aonly a few bolt from under the trim piece that need to come off then you can take the whole ash tray off an replace a new one. Not sure how you would fix the spring release thing, but is simply to remove and replace.

I don't think it works with such an old car unless you have your idrive update by dealer.

look at post 6, if you have the top one then i think it wont work

Thanks for the reply, does it have to be a dealer to do an idrive update?

How can i tell what the latest version is?

Thanks
Graham
