Stranded. Help! - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

My serpentine belt slipped off! Lost power steering... Etc.

I have it In place except for around the tensioner. How do I get something to flex and give me some room to slip it on?

Brute force? On what?

u should be able to push something to loosen something to put it around, yes i know vauge as hell but i dont know n51/n52s too well, but when i changed it on my s54 it was pretty easy, you just need to find what you can push to get it so you can get the belt to go on

Maybe a little crank to push it in place? not sure if we can do this in our cars though... keep us posted.

Update.. Got the dust cover off the pully. And a buddy to grab some tools. One bolt and jump start.. I should be back on the road.

I've had belts break but not just slip like that.

Probably just time to get a new belt and it has some oil on it. Never done a belt on this engine. Hoping it's just that one hex bolt!

If it slipped off there the first time...it will probably do it again...

It sounds like your idler or tensioner pulley is starting to seize up and NOT holding good tension on the belt allowing it to become loose and slip off...

The correct tool is a t60 torx in an 18" breaker bar. The front of the tensioner has a star shaped hole where the torx goes. My guess is your tensioner is bad and that is why the belt fell off. Put the belt back on, start the engine and watch the tensioner pully. Look from above and make sure everything lines up. If the tensioner is bad, it will be farther back than the other pulleys.

My tensioner bolt was 95% sheared off when I happened to look under the hood and noticed it. It would have failed at any time; I was on borrowed time. Luckily I found it.
