Tail light failure, interesting feature!

I had my main left rear running lamp burn out yestreday (the middle portion with horizonal stripes). Interstingly if it burns out, the car automatically lights up the lower section of the light. Upon replacing the proper bulb the light functioned again as normal.

All functions including braking, signalling, etc. worked perfectly even with a burned out bulb.

This is an extremely nice feature. Even if your bulb burns out the car is smart enough to provide a temporary fix to avoid a ticket!

Very cool. Not to mention the safety aspect. Did you get a warning of the bulb failure?

I've seen something similar on an X3 I once saw on the road. The turn signal was burned out on the rear light cluster, so it blinked one of the red (brake/running?) lights instead when the person was turning.

Mercedes has had this for a while, perhaps BMW has too. I recall that on the W203 C-class, if a front indicator fails then it will flash a foglight as a substitute.

That's good to know--you get it replaced under warranty right?

03 plus E46 have this too. Yes, it does have it on my friend C320 too.

Answers to questions

Yes I did get a left tail lamp failure warning.

No I didn't take it to the dealer to fix the bulb. I have a set of spare bulbs that came with the car (probably because it is a european delivery). To change the bulb you simply remove the carpeted cover in front of the tail light from inside the trunk. Then there is one tab that you unclip and the whole plastic tail light assembly slides out. A nice piece of engineering. Very simple to replace the bulb!

Yes it was the brake light that started working as a parking lamp, and blinker. I'm impressed with BMW on this one. Makes up for some of my other frustations with the car.

Happened to me as well. Had my left tail light burn out. Got a warning on the iDrive.

Was in a shopping mall where I saw the reflection of the tail lights in the rear view and was like WTF - that does not look like it has burnt out. When I had a closer look realised it was the lower section being used. Very very cool.

Took it in and the dealer replaced it for free. woo hoo

Cool! Does this technology prevent us to get a ticket in the states though? haha

it does since both left and right tail lamps will be lit (unless of course all the bulbs burn out).
