Alloy refurbishment - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

There have been quite a few threads recently and it has made me think about wanting to do something with mine.

I have the 18" BMW star 189 alloys which I quite like.

Option A - Keep these as winter tyres and buy some 19" reps (not sure which ones)

Option B - Get my current ones refurbed

I am leaning towards option B as I dont have anywhere to store the other alloys, money is a bit tight as I am planning some engine mods and dont want to spend too much.

Now I am in a debate whether to go down the normal painting or powder coat route and if so which colour/shade - Open to suggestions

Pros/cons of normal paint vs powder coating and if anyone has any pics please feel free to post up as it will help me with ideas

I left my csl,s in on Saturday for a refurb. Getting them sprayed 1/2 chrome black. Wasnt cheap( 340+vat)

but they strip the wheels first powder coat them then spray them. Bring on the good weather.

Don't go with replica wheels as the quality won't be as good as oem and they will be heavier thus inspiring weight will be worse

If you refurbish your wheels take them to a proper outlet that strips them down.

I would highly recommend Lepsoms and you can normally drive there they will lend you a set of wheels and then come back a couple of days later to have basically brand new wheels.

My mate had his Aston Martin wheels done and they were better than new.

Not true. My 225m and 313 reps were the roughly the same weight, both cracked when i put runflat on for a short period.

I have non runflat and have no cracking issues.

I didn't know Lepsons lend sets of wheels!! It doesn't mention it on their website but it's handy to know as I need mine done.

They don't keep all cars, but due to BMW wheels having a tendency to crack they have a number of BMW sets. It's the run flats that are causing the wheels to crack. That's what they told me when I called them up

Thanks all for advice, I have decided to go down the painting route rather tahn powdercoat but will wait till summer when I change my tyres
