335d Oil change pricing
Hello All,
I want to know what everyone is being quoted for oil service. I have called a few dealers around my area (San Diego) and got quotes for between 250 dollars and 500 dollars. I am not going to pay 500 dollars (after yelling at the guy for how crazy that was he said he would simply not include a replacement cabin air filter for which he was charging 200 dollars for - a 20 dollar item on amazon). What do you think is a competitive price to shoot for when calling the dealers for an oil change? Also, I don't want to change my own oil. Thanks. |

You said you don't want to change you own oil but it's soooo easy. We have dipsticks. Get a topsider pump and change the oil yourself. Takes 15 minutes and you do it all from the top! In November 8 quarts of the SLX oil plus filter cost me less than $70 at the dealer (with my BMWCCA discount + Tax).

You shouldn't pay more than 125 for a change at a dealer (actually it should be about 95). The day mine started charging me 350+ without any justification other than trying to realize improve margin was the day I ordered oil, etc to do it myself. The one bit of clarification here is that you are talking oil change. If you have a dealer add DEF, they will charge you additional labor and--very likely-- a 2.0 multiplier on the list price of the fluid. This could be a large part of your 250-500 quote.
Either way, simply ridiculous. I would consider taking silvers advice and learning how to do it yourself. It's nothing to be afraid of, just--like any DIY-- have the right tools, take your time, and be patient if something doesn't seem to be going right...and be happy knowing that you are not making a needless donation to someone else's financial good fortune.

I use the "Liquivac Topside Oil Changer" (paid $39 at a boat supply store). It has just enough capacity (8 qts) to do the full oil extraction.

More info from my end.
500 - BMW San Diego 250 - BMW Encinitas I am basically looking for a "good deal" price that I can ask for over the phone. I'd like it to include an oil change, filter, and top off of DEF. All done properly, hopefully with a free car wash and no check engine lights. I also live in a condo. Working on your own car in the common parking lot is not allowed. Thanks again for all the replies |

I would say 95-120 for the oil change + $15-20/g of DEF sounds "fair" as far as dealer pricing is concerned.

146$CAN (=146$US right now) at BMW Laval here in Canada. DEF not included but they told me it would be 40$ max if the tank is empty. They charge DEF based on what they put in.
I find this reasonable considering the 25,000km (15,000miles) range this oil change gives us (requiring a good quality oil and filter to do so). |

I believe I will get the topside oil pump and start doing the changes myself, get a jug of the DEF from the VW dealer once the factory covered maintenance is up. Like working on my own car and getting to know it. |

They only thing you want to get from VW is the 1/2 gallon bottle because it has the correct fitting on it and you can reuse it. Get the DEF from an auto parts store or truck stop. Here in the states they run about $12 US for the 2.5 gallon container.

I ended up just going with an oil change (minus the DEF and other stuff - like replacing air cabin filter for 250 dollars that I can do for 20 with amazon). Cost was 135 with a car wash. Also had the dealer look into other issues. I will now have to go over the VW to get the DEF bottle on the cheap. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
