ESS or COBB for a 335IS?
Been searching and lurking for several months trying to decide to tune or not. No plans for extensive mods but would like better throttle response and a bit more power. Have a 2011 335is with 8,000 miles on it and want something realiable and issue free (for dealership visits also). Can't seem to decide between ESS or COBB? Seem like COBB is much more popular but why? No plans for an FMIC, downpipes, meth or dragstrip time. More of a weekend driver since I travel weekly. Have 93 octane readily available in my area. Any advice?

Cobb in my opinion. I don't think i've heard of anyone on here running ESS so idk how the reviews are or how it is in terms of power. Cobb is also great since you can get a protune for more power

Cobb is insane and takes like 30 minutes! DON'T LET anyone talk you out of it! Cobb is outstanding!!! I spent over 1k on flash tunes before getting cobb. Don't make the mistake I did.

Have COBB on my 335is and it really unleashes the power of this car + the simplicity cannot be beaten. Go for it! I wasn't going to get any other mods on mine either... That plan didn't work... Haha got the mod bug

Ontop of what others have said, the convenience of a handheld flasher and the fact that you can "unmarry" (uninstall) the tune and sell it when you are done really make Cobb a no brainer. Plus if you ever add more mods the OTS maps are free.

I run a PROcede and I love my tune. But, if I had to do it all over again, I would be hard pressed not to just go with COBB and Aquamist. Regardless of what you do, just have fun with it and learn as much as you can. If you don't understand anything about your car, you're wasting your time.

The first 335is to break 11 was with Cobb AP Protuned by Jake@PTF
There are multiple flavors of power to select from the Cobb AP provided you have the supporting mods. Also, whenever you need to resell the Cobb AP it holds its value |

Based on the OP's requirements COBB would be a better choice.

Cobb all the way. Almost nobody uses the ESS tune. That doesn't mean that it is bad, but if you ever have any questions, it will be hard to get answers unless you talk to ESS directly.
The handheld flashloader for Cobb is really great, too. Loading maps is very easy. |

Go with Cobb tune. I was in same situation as you. I just wanted to do a tune and no major upgrades. I wanted to just run stage 1 aggressive with 93octane. For that purpose the cobb served me real well.
However, like few others said once the mod bug bites you will soon find yourself doing small upgrades here and there. I ended up going with more free flowing catback exhaust for mostly sound and bit more power. Next step I can see coming is down pipes. ![]() Quote:

I run ESS. I made a conscience decision to run it. I have found it to be insanely fast and easy to switch programs using a laptop.
There's not a lot of people on this forum who run the ess tune, but it really is a top notch tune. Shoot me a message if you have any specific questions

Nothing against ESS tunes, but Cobb is just easier to do.

First drive on the COBB tune is complete. All I can say is WOW. Easy install, no error codes, and a noticeable improvement in power. Kicking myself for waiting a year to install a tune. One the linear throttle setting, the car drives smoother for around town and has more power than the tires can handle when you get on it. Money well spent.
