Exclamation 2007 335i 80k - Turbo replacement?! WTF

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
[Updated on Feb 14th]

Dealer said BMW USA denied the 8yr/80k miles warranty on the wastegate/turbos. Please see the estimates below.

Now, I'm screwed.. what can I do?

[Original post - Feb 6th]

Just got a call from the dealer, 99% chance of need to replace the turbos, will confirm tomorrow. Just to diagnose the problem, it was $220.00! (value updated)

Some background:
2007 335i 80K miles, I bought it in 2011 with 49K

Oil was changed last time in October
In January, I noticed some oil spill in the garage and oil light was on (+1qt), so I added the quarter
Last week, I started to hear a weird sound (like wind or a whistle) when accelerating
After a few days, I could feel the lack of power in high revs
This week, oil light was on again, so I took it to a independent dealer (same I used for oil change a couple of times)
They told me there are two leaks: one in the transmission area and another in the turbo area

Here are the pics they sent me:

Forget about the transmission for now... Do you guys think it is really the turbo? Can't it be something else?

They will send me the price and description of the parts/services tomorrow. Searching on-line, I saw that turbo replacements goes for $5k+.. Fu**

Thanks!

Turbo's might be covered. Read below.

E90, E92, E93 (MY 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010): 335i including xDrive

BMW NA has agreed to extend, to a total of 8 years or 82,000 miles, whichever comes first, the emissions warranties covering the Settlement Class Members’ vehicles for any failure of a turbocharger caused by a defect in a turbocharger wastegate.

The turbocharger wastegates’ 8 year/82,000 miles warranty supersedes any applicable coverage provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned program or any BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract in effect. This component’s warranty extension applies to the above-listed models only. It is applicable to eligible vehicles which are registered and operated in all 50 states. The existing warranty coverage for all other parts has not changed.

I'm not a tech so I honestly don't know if oil leaking is related to the wastegate.
So... your turbos MIGHT be covered if you're only at 80k miles. I don't know how the dealer will try to play it though.

Just checked a few links to the extended warranty. There is hope! Fingers crossed as well..

Why wouldn't it be covered by the warranty? Any negotiation techniques I should be aware of once I get to the dealer?

I have that same exact leak as seen in the first photo, but i had my turbos replaced 6k ago. I hope you figure out what it is. I heard it could be caused by the oil filter housing leaking.

I was at the dealer today talking to them about this on why I didn't get a 335i and the SA told me it is a 120k now but maybe he said 120km...

The extended warranty only applies to turbo failure due to wastegate defect.

Read the service bulletin in this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...egate+warranty

Good luck OP.

Just talked to the Indy.. he quoted me $4.700,00 to replace both turbos. If it's only a problem with the wastegate or if it's just 1 turbo, it would be cheaper.

I asked about the warranty and he is doing some research. Anyways, I'm taking the car tomorrow morning to the BMW dealership.. fingers crossed.

^ this

Make sure they check the oil filter housing first. It is a very common leak and mine was dripping all around my turbos, at first they thought I would have to replace them. Very different looking bill!

Good call, but with the lack of power and noise, indy may be right..

Overpriced:
2 turbos @ 600 each
10 hrs labor @ 120/hr
200 in misc gaskets and parts
Oil change 85
Coolant change 100
Should be paying about 2800 to replace turbos.

Or better; shouldn't happen at all.

Now I remember a bit more why I *want* cars with NA engines.

Wastegates can rattle and that is a fact in any turbo engined vehicle out there. However what typically takes the turbos out is hammering the car when the oil temperature is not up to operating temperatures.
If you respect these limits you will not blow seals and get what is either called a lazy turbo or one that is puking oil.
That is why there is a temperature gage, problem is that BMW never really tells you that you should respect that limit.
I am not aware that BMW has extended the warranty past the 8 years/ 82K miles.
If you buy used you don't know how hard the PO drove the car. I do hope BMW covers this since BMW is picking the tab up not that dealer the dealer is usually very good at replacing the turbos.
I expect my turbos and wastegates to last the entire life of the car because I do respect the need to have warm oil before getting on it.

OP please post how this comes out...

quoted 2,200 for labor (@125/hr = 17.6h).. sounds really high, but he said he had to take out the engine...

I've seen labor on turbo replacement as low as 10hrs and as high as 20hrs. Really depends on the place.

And I doubt you will find new turbos for $600 each. Ever since the extended warranty went through, the price has almost doubled (supply/demand). Currently on Tischer, they want $1100 each. You might as well go to an Indy and go the RB route.
