Does the e90 log vehicle speed?

Hi everyone, I know that our cars are very advanced in electronics and vehicle logs so I was wondering does the car log speed data?

The reason I asks is because I was pulled over the other day by the California Highway Patrol and he states I was doing 90! I do have a radar in my car so when I heard it go off, I look down on my speedo and saw I was only doing 62. I then begin scanning the freeway for the CHP just to see how accurate my radar is and right after a bend in the freeway I see him on the side of the road. I passed him and a few seconds later he pulls me over telling me that he clocked me doing 90!

I continue to plead to him telling him that there must be some misunderstanding and after some back and forth he lets me off with a warning. So I was wondering if he were to give me a ticket, would it be possible to pull the logs off the vehicle and show it to the judge in court if it were to happen again?

Only when it tosses a code does the speed/engine parameters get logged.

The rest of the time, no.

You would then need a time log as well... You got a warning, I wouldn't sweat it. The question is would you really want a speed log? Seems like one more thing to be used against us not for us.

He probably gave a warning because he knew you weren't speeding and was hoping to find some BS secondary violation on you or your car. I wouldn't sweat it, I got pulled over going 117 in a 65 when I was younger, got away with a warning

It would be good to have in case I ever get accused of speeding and was actually not speeding. Better to provide some sort of evidence since without it would would be my world against the cops and we know how that will end up.

In regards to using it against us, I don't think it can or at least the judge and cop would not know so I doubt it will ever be used against us since it is our possession.

You know I kept on replaying what happened in my mind and from what I can tell the officer really felt I was speeding. I wonder what happened to cause him to think so, maybe he shot the radar and it picked up another car and since my car "looked" like it was going fast he thought it was me and truly believed it. I'm not expert in how these officers catch speeders so if anyone that knows more can chime in with some thoughts.

I see a lot of dash cams with the speed being logged.

get a dashcam with GPS - it will record and log your speed pretty accurately. These thing are not expensive. Could also be useful when there is a meteorite in the sky...

That sounds quite interesting. Is there one in particular you recommend?

Blackvue (DR400G-HD) and Itronics (ITB-100HD) are the best on the market currently.

Or probably, just a cam installed behind your seat which can also capture the speedometer

Was it Ponch or John? You can just call the NSA and ask them to tell you how fast you were going. They can also tell you the last time you were playing hide the salami with your pillow

He said you were "clocked". What is "clocked"? Is there a clock involved? How is this done from a cop sitting in a car, this "clocking" he speaks of?

He said that he did a visual of my vehicle and determined I was going fast. He then shot his radar and it read 90. I'm just telling you guys what he told me.

That happened to me before. I kindly asked him to see the radar gun. I go you see this mounted device its a valentine 1 radar detector. I knew you were there 2 miles prior of me coming. He said thats illegal to have. I was like in the state of Illinois its not you might want to know the law. He called me a smart ass and gave me a warning after 3 cops showed up.

Always ask to see the clocked speed in the police car, if they refuses, ask him to please note it in the ticket comments.

He got me with radar because my radar was going off KA the entire time. When it went off I looked down on my speedo at I saw that I was only doing about 62 mph so I knew I was not speeding. About 1 mile after it went off, he pulled me over.

It sounds like you're okay this time with the warning, but for the future, I'd back the dashcam idea. Better yet, if you get one that records sound and speed via GPS, you'll have an ideal cop-honesty-setup. Your radar detector goes off and makes its alert tone, which the dash cam will pick up. When reviewing the video, you'll be able to hear the tone and see exactly what your speed was at the beginning and during the period of radar measurement.

Of course, it won't lie for you. If you get picked up doing 90 when really you were doing 75, you could well fight it and get a lower fine, but you may not get it thrown out. Making the argument that you have evidence of 75mph when the cop says 90, thus it was a false reading, thus throw it all out MIGHT work SOME places, but it seems like a judge would only reduce the fine rather than trash it totally. I'm no lawyer.

Anyway, more information certainly is better than less when you control it, and I've been thinking of getting a dash cam for protection from insurance fraud and whatnot anyway, so it seems like a relatively good investment, especially if you've already got the radar detector for audio cue.
