A warning about auto boxes on 06+

Long story short, but I've just had a brand new BMW auto box on my 330i. The first sign that anything was wrong was when changing gear in sport mode. Anything more than an imperceptible change of cogs, any snatching, was an indication that the box was on its way out... My jolting symptoms started when shifting full throttle from 2nd to 3rd in sport mode

Brand new box and its as smooth as silk when changing in both fully auto and manual/sport mode..... Any slight jolting is not normal, despite what anyone will tell you!

I highly recommend the BMW warranty, covered me for what would have been a very expensive repair!

Me too but only about 10% of the time.

How much is a gearbox?

Yep, really. A new box was over 4k at 'warranty rates on parts and labour'.

I'd seriously never run a car like this without the appropriate warranty...

Maybe we'll just ignore it and accelerate harder then!! Would have to remove the map I guess before any warranty claim?

Haha yeah DS mode is made for mad driving!

Yeah i'd strongly suggest removing it. I don't think any remap is undetectable, no matter what the companies say.

I wouldnt worry unduly the 3.0D boxes are a bit clunky but I dont think they change too many. Its a beast of a thing, probably suitable for a small bus. The lci cars have better changes from my experience and different software Im led to believe.

The only time it's ever done anything other than perfectly smooth is when its cold in 2nd gear..

When cold the torque converter slips to allow it to heat up quicker, when warm its pretty much always locked.

Sometimes when cold and driving about as slow as possible it locks sharply but its not on a gear change.

All gear changes in D, DS and M are perfectly smooth.

Although I'm keen for a software update.. Read this recent thread below.

I don't wanna put the shits up you but what's the build date on your car? , if it's pre march 07 , gearboxes are rarer than unobtanium , compatible boxes were made for all of about 5 months then they were ditched for canbus. Being that that was 7 years ago , i would summise that a large proportion of those gearboxes are now coke cans

how do I know all this , well , I've been there warrantyless and requiring a new box , lets just say that it was a very long and very stressful 2 months watching at my 13k paperweight slowly rusting away.

Now it's sorted but I do get a little thud in the morning in 1st, first press of the accelerator, guess it's down to thick fluid that hasn't been pumped round the stator. Other than that it's smooth.

So to get a software update do we just phone up the dealer and ask? I'm sure there's a good chance they will say you've got the latest one...

Don't worry , you can always get your existing box rebuilt. Just requires fundage of around 3 grand

Good luck trying to get a dealer in the UK to do it for you. Most seem like they would rather eat their hat rather than give you an update for free. Even when paying they aren't keen on it!

I've had a good Indy quote me 100 all in for the full car update - inc gearbox update.

I never said it would be free - or that I'd be going to a main dealer.
