F30 Loaner

Took my car in today for service and they gave me a new F30 328i with the M-sport package. Oh boy! I really want one now. I was really impressed with the 328i engine. Actually I was driving to work and testing the different modes (sport, eco-pro, etc...) and I thought it was a 335i! In sport mode the throttle sensitivity is extremely impressive and feels like it has more pep than our N57 engine! While driving i was probably 50/50 between eco-pro and sport (spirited driving) and manged to get 36mpg. This was pretty much all interstate driving.

What to do...

Yeah I had one too. That engine is superb. It sounds like garbage though but boy does it move. the power feels great, all thru the power band and it doesn't fall off. it goes all the way to redline and beyond. shifts quick and power keeps coming. that is when you wide open throttle. I had mine and got anywhere from 29-30mpg. I hated the steering, thought the ride was too floaty and its a bit big of a car. Mine was just a rwd model. I can't believe they ask 40 grand for it though starting. Insane

How so? Your D has 25 more horses and 170 more lb/ft of torque in it than the F30 you drove.

I have no idea... When in sport mode, the 2013 328i felt quicker and more responsive than my 335d. To get the same response in my car i feel like have to floor it and it doesn't last as long.

I had one during my last service visit and while I thought the power plant was vastly improved, I still thought it felt anemic and more disconnected. I drove the car as I would my d and I manged high teens mpg vs low 20's in my d. I could not wait to get my d back.

I don't get it either. <head scratch>

I drove an F30 328i Sport line a month back just to check it out. The engine is eager and responsive, but I immediately felt the deficit in torque. No comparison. I have the right car for me.

I believe that it is the throttle response... the F30 328i in sport mode has excellent throttle response where we have a bit of lag in our d's (well at least I do). However, in pure brute force (not to mention soul) I'll take my d any day of the week.

Had the f30 for a week (dealer scratched my door down to the metal and repainted it) and I got no where near 30 mpg, and I babied it for a day (just 1) to see how it would do.

My loaner was a nice enough car. Softer over the road imperfections. Responsive in sport mode. Comfortable. And a bit boring. May as well buy an equivalent Lexus or gussied up Camry.

A friend of mine who works at BMW says the main complaints he's been getting on the F30 is that it sounds like a diesel.

Here's what I think of the F30 328i after driving it on and off for the past few months:

+ buttery smooth engine
+ no throttle lag
+ rear looks better than the E90
+ Estoril Blue paint is simply gorgeous
+ improved interior to look more modern (still like the spartan & subtle look of the E9X)

- pitiful exhaust note (our diesels ain't any better though!)
- lifeless electric steering
- front looks worse than the E90
- start/stop function is god awful (yes I know you can code it to turn it off permanently)
- annoying automatic climate control
- gas mileage not as good as anticipated
- still haven't fixed the cupholders eh BMW?

So you can probably tell I'm not a big fan...

At idle, it sounds more like a diesel than the 335d does. You can barely tell a 335d is running.

The 328i's noise is par for the course for direct-inject engines though. A lot of newer cars sound like that. But rest assured that the new 328d (*cough* 320d) will have more of that diesel sound we know and love!
