Some thoughts on my F30 loaner.

Now I know we have all read reviews and have opinions, This is nothing more than my observations.

Nothing scientific with stats just personal opinions on my loaner car I had for the last few days.

Some Background :
  • My car -
  • 2008 6MT 328i Sport RWD
    .
  • Loaner
  • 2013 8Speed Auto 328i RWD ( 5k miles )

Steering was definitely lighter like described by others but if put in sport mode it didnt feel bad at all. The 2.0t impressed me, Car def has some balls and appeared to handle nice.

Some things that I didnt like that stood out and appeared a downgrade from what I have become used to with my E90 :

Smooth Inline 6 replaced with a 4cylinder.. yes she's fast & im sure gets better MPG but listening at idle it does not sound like a premium car at all..
Very noisy whether its the direct injection or what it sounded loud to the point my non savvy girlfriend asked if thats normal ( her 150k mile 99 4 cylinder accord is quieter ).

Start Stop - This has no place on this level of a car, Yes I can see if it gets more MPG's but its annoying the car bucks when turning off and then bucks back on.
Its not smooth at all and I didnt think it was worth its return on MPG if there is much of any. Needless to say they give you an easy way to disable which is nice.

8 Speed Auto - Shifts awesome during hard acceleration but when your just coasting I found it just sitting there at high rpm for longer than expected after some hard
acceleration you feel it buck each gear as it downshifts. Its not smooth at all almost feels like theres a problem.

Interior - Its way way more plasticky then the E90, The center console is hard plastic, parts of the door panels are hard plastic, the sunvisors look like they belong on a 14k hyundai they are some hybrid plastic material with very small cheesey looking mirrors.

Overall I felt it was a nice car but some small things I cant help but see they were cost cutting a little too much, Another thing thats not anything new but a pet peeve of mine is optional HID headlights? Really? On a 45k car its optional to get HID headlights? This should be standard across BMW's lineup it cant cost that much more they are standard on cars like VW GTI, Honda S2k and all Japanese luxury cars.

Share your thoughts and opinions if you have driven an F30 did you guys notice any of the above things I observed?

Just turned my F30 328i loaner back in. It had 530 miles. It was a base model with 17" wheels and no packages. $37k. I honestly couldn't tell you if it was 4 or 6 cyl.

Coming from the 335 I wasn't expecting much power so I didn't push it hard at all since it's still in the break-in period anyway. The car sounds like a diesel - very loud lifters. To me it just sounded cheap. I like the interior but I see what you're saying about the cheap feel to some of it.

I don't like the boxy idrive screen popping up out of the dash, and much prefer the smooth lines and integrated feel of the e90.

I completely agree on the auto-off feature - very clunky and awkward. I liked the fact that you could turn it off.

I don't like the new shifter with all the buttons and lights. I do like the layout of the console with the cup holders.

All in all, I much prefer the e90.

Agreed, The shifter took some getting use to and power wise it felt smooth and linear you couldn't tell it was turbo ( 0 lag ).

My loaner was a semi base model too but had navigation, heated front and rear seats, folding mirrors, comfort access and a few other options..

I am in no way dogging the car as it did drive well overall just some of those observations were not expected at all.
Usually when I turn a loaner in I feel like my cars outdated and I want it.. Unfortunately this was not the case this time.

I had one for a few days last week. I hated it. Steering was light. Car was jerky during decel due to the battery regeneration. The engine turning off thing was annoying. Radar guided cruise control sucks. Even at the closest setting, its too much distance, so cars were constantly cutting me off, causing me to slow down even more. The steering wheel controls were not intuitive and I didn't like the scroll wheel for changing radio stations. Finally, the HUD was useless during the day with my polarized sunglasses.

Hated it.

Wow I guess im not alone, Maybe thats what I felt on the decel to me it just felt like the transmission dowshifting.

It appears I am not alone with these observations, I dont remember this many negative things being said when they moved from the E36 to the E46 or E46 to E90.

Not alone at all.
I had three different ones for almost 3 weeks.
Steering sucks.
Noisy, reduced sound deadening I guess.
Felt soft and disconnected.
Too plastic.
Hated the way the storage pocket cut into my left leg.
Don't like the grab to close the door. The e90 is better.
Center console too big and intrusive.
Footwell felt like I was standing in a bucket.

Wouldn't take one in trade for my e90.

Had a 328 xdrive loaner last week. Thought it was slow and boring. Was also annoyed at the volume buttons on the other side.

Wan't a fan either. Super light steering. Clunky auto start-stop. The car just felt big, soft, and disconnected like a Camry...it didn't have that tight BMW feel to it. Maybe because it wasn't a sport package. The key fob also seemed unnecessarily big and it sounded hollow...the E9x one sounds solid. The motor is definitely solid in terms of power delivery, but it's very loud and sounds unrefined.

Doesn't make me want to upgrade at all.

Agreed as well the Key seemed huge lol, Motor was fast but not refined ( very noisy idling ).

I agree on it not having that BMW driving feel im use to but it wasnt a sport package car which is what I drive.. Not sure if that would make that big of a difference but definately did not feel as refined and tight as im use to in a BMW.

Glad I am not the only one who thought the 4cyl turbo was loud.

I drove a base model F30 last week. It was a rental from Hertz. I didn't know BMW offered such a low-rent trim level (well, it makes sense, as they use the 3 series for taxis and police cars in parts of the world). Seriously, I've driven Nissan Maximas that were much better equipped. The four cylinder is a bit odd, but I suppose one could get used to it after spending more than a week with the car. I only had it for two days.

I drove an X1 that had the same engine as the F30, 4 cyl turbo charged for a loaner and it was loader than my old 2004 diesel Jetta! on that note, I like my I6 335, sounds and drives like a premium car.

I drove F30 328i and E90 328i both plenty of times. Sort of agree with some things people don't like about F30. I personally like the way it drives, especially in sports mode. I really like its quick and relatively smooth for this drivetrain acceleration. Would I compare N54/N55 to N20 (even modified)? Probably not. Would I take N20 over N52? Any time, any day. F30 328i in sports mode (have yet to try it with sports package) drives way better than E90 328i to me.

I much prefer my e92 over the F30 loaner I had for 3 days. I couldn't wait to get my car back! The interior was just bland to me, like did not feel luxurious.

Like most here, I hated the stop/start deal, turned it off ever time.

Oh and I found weed in the center console... Some one was blazin up in the brand new loaner

I agree with most of you. I wish BMW followed the interior design somewhat close to of new 5 series. I hate the center dash area as it reminds me of early 2000s civic style. Also the instrument cluster is below par as well. It does feel bigger and I like the exterior but wish it had the 5 series interior.

They should have just taken the normal key fob and attached it to a piece of 2X4 if they didn't want us to forget and leave it in the car.

My 335 lacks the sport package and I can tell you the F30 wasn't nearly as tight. I've also driven the e92 328i both with and without sport package. I don't think it's a sport package thing - it's the F30.

Interesting...I thought they had fixed or minimized the stop-start issue. Makes me wonder what is was like before I have yet to experience the JOY of driving one of these since I seem to always get a 2011 335 for a loaner. No complaints though.

I had one a couple of weeks ago, but only got to drive it for 15 or so miles. The car sure felt fast, once the turbos kicked in, it definitely pushed my head back into the headrest. I didn't notice the lighter steering feeling as others have noted. The volume buttons on the other side of the steering wheel confused the hell out of me. I turned off the start/stop right after the first time. It just didn't seem right.
