Backup Camera Feature Comparisons?

I just bought a 2011 E90 335d. My first BMW, so still learning all the options and retrofits. So much out there, it can get a bit overwhelming...

In reading through the forums, I see there are several options for retrofitting a backup camera and all seem to be reputably and have people giving positive input. But there must be some differences in them. Has anyone done a comparison of features of these so that someone can determine which is the best fit for their needs?

The ones I have found:

Bimmer Tech (both OEM and general)
Bimmer Retrofit
Tadi Brothers
ModMyNav
AlekShop

I am not looking to start any sort of war about which is better, I'm just looking to compare features - things one has that another doesn't, etc - and maybe the pro/con of that feature. Some info can be gained from the websites, but others personal experiences on the install, etc. would be good too. Hopefully a comprehensive comparison in one place would help others choose.

I'm thinking about things such as:
  1. OEM integration (fits in existing iDrive setup) or takes entire screen?
  2. Minimum requirements (SA609, anything else?)
  3. PDC required?
  4. Camera install location, picture quality, and how it handles low light
  5. Dynamic or static backup lines?
  6. Can it be turned on when the car is moving?
  7. Additional video input available with the installed unit?
  8. Instructions, effort, time to install
  9. Plug n Play or some wiring that needs to be done?
  10. Coding needed?
  11. Coding available to extend features/configuration?
  12. Other??

TIA!

I will refrain from posting here how great our rear view cameras are and I guess you should just contact each vendor individually and get the answers you are looking for.
If you are interested in BimmerTech rear view cameras check this short article how to choose the best rear view camera for your BMW: http://www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/item/1-bimmertech-blog

Also get in touch with us by email if you have any questions.

Good luck!

I have the BimmerTech and like it a lot. I do not have PDC.

Biggest pros:
Good image quality, fills up entire screen without PDC
Seamless integration - camera barely visible
Dynamic parking lines!!!

Only con:
There is a brief (1-2 seconds) delay after you put the car in reverse before the image appears on the screen (on my 6AT, at least)

Thanks for the input.

In trying to keep things strictly to facts, I created a very brief comparison of a few I found. Below are the areas of info I gathered:
  • Cost
  • iDrive Integration?
  • Plug and Play?
  • PDC Required
  • Parking Lines
  • Camera
  • View Angle
  • Min Illumination
  • Pixels
  • Additional Video Input
  • Turn on when Moving
  • Coding
  • Front Camera
  • Other

Attached is an image of what I have pulled together (wasn't sure how to put a table in a post). It is in no way comprehensive and it doesn't take into account things like the delay you mentioned, but it was my starting point.

They all seem like viable options for different reasons (budget, etc). At this point I know what I am going to buy but the intent of this thread was to compile facts/specs in one place so I'll leave it at that.

If anyone wants to contribute to this and we want to add pros and cons (let's keep it to facts, not "blah blah blah sucks") I'd be happy to compile and keep posting. Maybe it will help someone else.

I have BimmerTech camera in my LCI E90. Install was pretty straight forward. I don't have fold down seats so it took me a little bit more time to remove my seats. Also it was a bit challenging to place the "brains" of the camera behind climate control. Overall, I really like it. It was worth every penny.

This!

I don't have experience with any of the other cameras/vendors but I DO with Bimmtech. It's the Mercedes of back up cameras. Patryk is solid! The camera is VERY high quality and its some of the best money I have ever spent! /thread.
